Hello, I have started my own little photo business here In the maritimes and deal mostly with Motocross.
I thought I would start a post just on photography and deals with Camera, lenses, filters, certain modes, Aperatures, ISO, etc.. Also those who have D-SLR cameras to post their photos with information (Camera, Lense, Filter, etc..)

All of my photos are here, http://s17.photobucket.com/albums/b100/Goodwin03/

Here are some edited samples,

I think the ones posted were shot on 3072x2304. The smallest mine will shoot is 1632x1224. It does have a 640x480 res for the video, but that is way too small if you need to do cropping or if you want a decent size photo, pretty much! I have shot on all 8 different pixel resolutions my camera has and there's not much difference when resizing, obviously the 1632x1224 will loose less quality when sized to a 1024x768 or 800x600 ,for example, but it is not really noticable. I have found shooting at the higher resolutions leaves more margin for error, because you can crop and resize your intended target and still have a wallpaper sized image.

Canon Rebel XT and a 75-300 4-5.6 lense. I would like to get the 200 IS and a wide angle lense this year . Im going to try a polarizer next.

I think at the dunes,it would have been beneficial.

What kind of resizing programs are you using??

Also, you might try cropping some of your pics before you re-size them .That will help a little bit ;)but unfortunatly, quality is greatly lost when you downsize.

I would have got one in time for my trip, but the Camera shop guy talked me out of it trying to convince me it would make my pics too dark...

I then later took a Canon clas at the dunes(yes, Canon was there!! ) and they too thought a polarizer would have been good ,especially with all the glare on the sand.

Theres always NEXT YEAR!:D

Question for you camera experts .

I have a Canon Powershot A530 , it's a 5.0 mega pixels . Anyways the camera only came with a 16meg card which didn't allow for more than approx 6 pictures .... so lastnight I went out and bought a Lexar 512 meg card . Here's where I have a problem ...

With the samller card , I used to be able to point , click and it would snap the picture in the blink of an eye . Now with this new card , there's a HUGE delay .... I mean almost a second or more delay .

Is this a common thing when upgrading a memory card or is it just because I bought a crappy card ?? I only paid $30 at WalMart for the card . :ermm:

Equipment is about 70% of it. If you don't have an expensive camera, you won't get great pics. Sucks, but true.

Look into a top of the line Canon Rebel. I think they are around $800, but I'm not sure.

My Canon 20D was $1,500 and the lens was $700 I think.
It's sweet camera, I love it.

Well atleast I know I'm not the only one . I was thinking maybe it was the cheap card that I bought .

I used to have the Canon A75 , until it decided not to work anymore . Canon replaced it with this model . The old camera was a 3.2 megapixels and well this one is a 5.0 . I liked the other camera better because it was all metal ... this one is all plastic ... I think I got screwed somehow ( plus all my old cards didn't fit :grr: )

I was looking at the Rebel XT at Wally Mart the other day .... $800 and it looked like a nice camera . Anyone got any feedback on them?? I believe it was an 8 or 9 megapixels .

It takes the small thin memory cards I guess they are . My old camera used to take the larger thicker cards .

All I know , is that I had bought 3 memory cards for the old camera and they don't work with this new one . Over $100 in cards down the drain . :grr:

For a baseline SLR, the Canon is an AWESOME choice!! You can ALWAYS upgrade later ,your best investment will be your Lenses.

As for the delay...Yes, the quality of the card has some to do with your delays.Cards have speed to them as well. The better and more expensive cards, the better they shoot.Ive seen some cards that was as much as my lense or more!:eek2:

Im just guessing but a larger card may take more delay in a point and shoot as well.
If your able to save up and get one- I highly reccomend.
The Nikon is another great Camera.;)

You will REALLY appreciate your pictures and become an addict when you see the results a good camera will give you.

Ive had mine since Dec. and Ive shot over 5000 pics with it so far :o :p

I don't think you can go wrong with Canon!! If you just want a camera that takes a wicked photo and will eventually add on accesories (lense, filters, flash, larger/faster CF cards, etc..) then I would go with the Rebel 6MP..
I almost bought the Rebel but I am trying to get a little business going and decided to go with the Rebel XT 8MP because I know I would not have to up-grade for a really long time. Like 2-5 years.

But thats just my out look on it.

Hope this helps!

Ravage, I just went and bought me a Circular Polizer today:D

I learned a little bit about them today andthe one I bought was NOT cheap!:scary: BUT... found this Optical filter will be best suited for a digital lense and I wont have nearly as much darkening issues as the less priced ones will. I sawsome comparison pics and the colors looked betterwith this filter as well ..

I also bought a Monopod with a detachable head that comes off affixed to the Camera so it will be a breeze when changing locations to re-attach the camera.

Im gonna test it out tomorrow,so time will tell!:)

Thanks man. Im trying to get better with photography. My mother is big into it, she bought me my last camera setup. Once again im not very big into it, all i know is its a kodak with 5 mega pixel. She said its a decent starting camera. The originals are much better quality than showed up on the site here. Ive got a few pics a played with the flash, thats pretty neat how the flash can change the total look of the picture.

Here are a couple... nothing great in respect to professional photography.

This one was taken with a VERY VERY old Olympus 1.3MP (right when digital cameras were coming out). Horrible quality, but very cool picture - if that makes sense. :D We took it during a sunset cruise, right after we got engaged.

Those last 2 pics, was is dusty when you took the shot or is it because of the filter. To me, it looks like there was a lot of dust in front of you??

Also, try shooing with a larger f/stop (smaller number). Try to shoot below 4.5/f. You probably all ready know but this will throw the background out of focus and put the rider and/or in focus. But, it takes practice. :D

You know, they are!!! I don't know why, but, they are!!

The problem here in the Maritimes is that at a race, there is 4 hours in between quad motos!! So you get lots and lots of dirt bike pics. The quads all ride at once also. First the Pro's go, then about 20 seconds later the Juniors go. So you don't end up with many pictures of quads, which is a shame for me because they are my biggest potential buyers!! But, the dirt bikers are going past their quota this year LOL!

I just took a bunch of photos tonight at a fireworks display I attended. Some of the more difficult things I have ever tried to take photos of. All the following are uncropped and unaltered (only resized). Any tips, hints or suggestions are appreciated. Right now I'm making due with a Konica Minolta Z20 5MP. The pics were taken at F3.2 and 1/10 or 1/13 shutter speed.

Ok..the next time you want to shoot fireworks, or maybe a city light picture...anything really where a very long exposure is needed ...try this.

Set your camera up on your tripod and frame your shot. have a piece of heavy construction paper, a paper plate, even a cut piece of cardboard ready. (it needs to be black! paint it a few days before etc)

Set your camera to its longest shutter speed(bulb) if your camera has that setting. Hold the black piece a few inches in front of your lens when you are ready to release the shutter(using the self timer to release the shutter will also help keep camera movement to a minimum) with the bllack cardboard in front of the lens, the shutter releases, wait a few seconds(5 is ok) then move the piece out of the lenses path. Once you feel the shot has exposed long enough, slowly block the lens with the cardboard. let the shutter time out and close. This will help keep vibration down and your night shots will actually sharpen up.

Probably need to be resized. I've found it easier to upload a 800x600 copy to a site such as photobucket.com to host them, then post the [img] tags here. Gives you a little bigger picture than what can be uploaded to the site but not big enough to cause a hassle when others are looking.

My camera has a feature called a Histogram display. I know it has something to do with the brightness and such, but what exactly is it and how can I use it to my advantage when taking photos? Any links to tutorials or websites would be great.

I kinda like shooting fire shots also, just because it is luck of the draw when you get a really cool shot.

Panning, like all techniques takes practice and LUCK! I usually shoot anywhere between 180 and 250 shutter speed, and may have the flash on 1/4 depending on the lighting.

Can I ask what the pkg deal ran in price? It's gonna be around $1900 for the kit on ebay. Brand new, sealed. IDK, thats big $$ to spend on ebay though. I might just get a body and lens, but that would be the same price as the whole kit. I'm undecided.

mx428
07-18-2006, 02:11 PM
If I did just get the body from a camera shop/circuit city, what would be my best bet for a lense? I would love to have all that stuff for that price, but ebay is kinda sketchy, and I need it for Loretta Lynns.

You could start out with just a Telephoto lense and a smaller lense ,thats what I had to do to start out IF your on a Budget. Maybe consider a UV filter as well, its a safe measure for your lense as well..
You can pick up a Canon lense fairly cheap, but if your like some of the rest of us, you will want the good stuff before long :p lol

Comparing a camera locally and what I could buy on the internet, I found far better deals from reputablecompanies than buying from your local retailer.

Hope that helps some.

mx428
07-20-2006, 10:42 AM
I think i've decided on this set up. With the body, lense, and card it's going to be alot:eek:

Total:

$1,934.70

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/images/largeimages/183198.jpg
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/images/largeimages/304008.jpg

Oh well, it's alot of money, but i'm so xcore into photography now it's no biggie.

I might get the 20D though to start out, since this is my 1st SLR. it would save me $300.

I started another thread about digital slr cameras and which one was right for me but the thread was quickly buried. So I'll ask here.

Looking to upgrade to a SLR camera and would like to know what to look for and any personal experiences. Looking to only spend $6-800 for a body and lens. What size lens would be good for all around shooting? Pappy recommended a 70-200mm lens.

Been looking at the Canon Rebel. Good, bad, or any other suggestions?

Thanks

and a pic for good measure

Pappy

a rebel or rebel xt is not a bad camera....

just like suspension is key on a quad, the lens is the "suspension" on a camera set up. i am still shooting a lens that i bought over 15 years ago, a nikkor 2.8 70-200. back then it cost almost $2000, but worth every penny. i just switched it to my digital slr and kept on shooting.

be wary of alot of the seemingly good cheap lenses, you get exactly what you pay for.

Anyways, Back to photography. What would be a good beginner SLR Camera? I'm between Cannon Rebel's and Nikon D Series...Which ones are better??

$2500 seems fair

I prefer Nikon, but its all personal preference. I have the N70 and its a great camera, my brother has the Rebel XT and its good also.

What would be a good setup for a beginner photography who would like an SLR? Is a telephoto lens necessary?

I got a chance to shoot at a Canon workshop at the dunes this year and shot with some of these...

I think I got more Arm pump trying to hold up the Big Dawg than I get riding my quad!:o :p

that wasa really fun experience to be able to play with all those lenses

most any 6 mp or higher will be a good starting point, the more the better. a telephoto is not needed, infact i shoot at the lowest zoom my lens will allow as better pictures are taken there. A good fixed lens is worth its weight in gold, but is limiting at times. Zooms are fairly inexpensive these days so not buying one is asking for more trouple then not having it in your gear bag.

As well you should be.

A tip to keep your new prize running good, DO NOT CHANGE LENsS AT THE TRACK! Dust eats these cameras alive.

I've messed around with the Stitch program a little bit. Didn't really do to much though.

Now that im thinking about it i might have done it in photoshop doing it by hand. I think alot of it comes down to how well the pictures are taken in the first place.

Try using a try tripod and remembering something to use as a guide where the last shot left off.

yeah, mine had alot of staggers in them once they was stitched. I hadnt planned on using them for this purpose, they was just made so I didnt miss a shot I wanted. I thought I would just se how it works.

Ill have to try it on a jump next time and see how it turns out. The pic I had was a powerslide.

Ohhh, are you trying to create the look where the subject is shown several times in the same frame??? In that case i do not know of any programs to do it automatically. The way i do it is by piecing it together with photoshop.

4:41 AM and im talkin about photography... hehehe

I'm at Lorettas right now. The track sucks for shooting unless you have a media pass, and I don't. It's a bit of a bummer.

Theres no where you can see more then one or 2 sections of the track withing shooting distance. It's awesome thouhg, it's an all week party. I've been here since Saturday and it's insane. And the way these girls talk down here, wowzerz. It's so freaking hot that almost every girl is in a bikini:D :D
