i want to know if an aftermarket cdi will cause any overheating issues with my 400ex. would it be wise to invest in some air scoops also?

well you will generate more heat from the added rpm's, but shouldnt really be a problem as long as you are bouncin off revlimiter non stop... air scoops would help, and they look sweet!

The primary reason aftermarket CDIs have a potential for increasing engine temps is because most (all?) of them advance the ignition timing. That increases the chances of getting some detonation and THAT is wear the extra heat comes from.

If you're not detonating (either because your piston's compression ratio and other factors aren't likely to create detonation or because you're useing high octane fuel) then there shouldn't be any increased engine temps.

ok. i try to run the highest octane fuel i can get. either 93 from a pump or aviation from an airport. but i think i'm gonna play it safe and get air scoops anyways. because they DO "look sweet" and are practical.

If your piston is stock and you use the highest pump gas you can find (at least 91) then I don't think you'll have a problem with detonation even with aditional ign adv.

And I think air scoops are a good idea no matter what.
