Hotcams is a brand of aftermarket camshafts (you may already know that, I'm not sure). But what the cam does is control how far the engine's valves open and how long they stay open. Aftermarket cams can improve the breathing effeciency of an engine and change the characteristics of how HP and torque are produced (low end gains, top end gains, or a little bit of both). They are pretty easy to install. If you are comfortable adjusting your valves then don't hesitate to install a camshaft yourself.
