Mentos and Diet Coke

Anybody try this one yet? Quite spectacular. You dump a packet of Mentos into a 2-liter bottle of diet coke, and you get a rather violent reaction. Not "terrorist" violent, it's not explosive. You just get a soda fountain about 15ft high.

This is a trick of quantity and speed. It doesn't work well with small 20oz. bottles and a few mentos, you need to go full size 2-liter, and a full roll of mentos. You also need a way to dump the mentos in there really quickly, like half a second. Me, I made a small tube just slightly larger than the mints, and held them with my finger until I was ready.

Be careful not to crush your paper tube. It has to be fast, you don't want anything to impede the mentos as they drop. And when you drop them, get back fast.

I haven't tried but I have seen quite few vids of this on the NET. I have been meaning to research this because I want to kow what causes the reaction. Anybody remember Pop Rocks? The had to remove Pop Rocks from the market because if you ate Pop Rocks while drinking a soda it would wreck havoc on your stomach.

We used to steal bottles of pepsi @ the bowling allie and do it outside. Works with any caffine soda, its pretty funny to watch too

Diet just seems to work better, we tried several, and the diet seemed to get on average about a foot higher.

Did you leave the cap entirely off? it obviously will shoot higher if the cap is drilled making the pop shoot though a small hole but it harder to do


putting the mentos in and putting the cap on is pretty cool too, kinda like a dry ice bomb, you do need to shake the bottle somehow, thowing it works best for obvious reasons :blah:

my friend did it for his speech, he had only read about it so he goes to do it and he gets a paper tube and 2 packs of mentos in diet coke and it lifted the cieling tile and covered us in pop lol crazy ****

Chemistry tells me that if you crush them up and dump them into a heated bottle that was being slightly aggetated it would work the best.

but like mentioned in a previous post what would happen if u ate like 10 mentose and chugged a 2 liter

also u can still buy pop rocks and mythbusters proved it wont do anything to ur stomach didnt they?

diet doesnt work any better or worse than regular soda. they use it cuz its less stickier than sugar soda, less mess

Hold it from the bottom and drop it and run and it will make contact on the cap to the ground and rocket the bottle.

He means throw the bottle on the cap itself.

I don't think so. First off, if it's heated, you would lose a bit of carbonation as you open it. You want to keep as much carbonation in it as possible. The reaction is violent enough to pull the carbonation out without the need for additional heat.

The mentos are ideal because they are heavy, and sink to the bottom. This creates your reaction at the bottom to force everything upwards. If you crush them, you'll get a violent reaction at the TOP, and the reaction will push itself up and out. By keeping them whole and letting them sink to the bottom, you ensure the reaction will continue untl all the carbonation is depleted.

I was thinking stick the mentos to the underside of the cap, than slam it, but those guys had use more than one to get them to rocket like that.

You know how the mentos come with a tinfoil rapper. Well leave it rapped in that but open the bottom and let them slide in with the rapper so it esures you all the mentos will go in. Iv'e tried everyway possible and this way seems to work the best...good luck!

i did this at my work a couple months ago. it was an experiment, i work with kids so they thought it was cool. i tried many different ways from just putting them in there and letting it blow out the top, but i wanted to try and amke them shoot like rockets. i tried a bunch of time but i ran out of the soda, there has to be a trick to doing it becuase if you drop them in and than try to screw the cap on all you are going to do is get soaked iwth diet coke. i want to know how they do it or if anyone has any ideas on how they did it so the launch like rockets. i will be doing the experiment again soon i want to launch them in the air. haha

lol. Wait so all I have to do is get a 2 liter bottle of D.Coke and then get a roll of the regular mentos? Then I unwrapp the mentos to the silver wrapper and then slide them in??? No shaking?

It looks like the cap is just lightly placed on and when it hits the ground the reaction takes place therefore allowing the cap to imediately screw off of the bottle and take off..

But I have dropped a few mentos into a 20oz bottle, and normally it takes off right away....seems like too much would come out before that happens...oh well...looks like im gonna be buying some diet coke and mentos here shortly...
