I would recommend going with the full system for starters. HMF's slip ons are proven to work better with their own head pipe. I have heard the ballance series on a trx450r and I have heard the regular sport series on a yfz 450. The Ballance was a little louder to me, but not all that much. I think the regular sport series had a lil better tone to it. Trust me man, loud will get old reeeeally quick... I know you think it sounds kool, but I ride in the trees a lot and it kinda gets annoying. I have a 400ex with a HMF sport full system and it is LOUD in the trees. My 2 pennies.

a mikuni 170 is way too big. get a keihin 155 or 158 and shelve the airbox lid.

Keihin? Z400s have a Mikuni BSR36. I thought the carb was upgraded in 05' [shrug]--not sure if that changes the jetting specs or not.

Whatever the case regarding the carb, you'll have to rejet according to your location and riding conditions. Don't expect anyone to hand you a jet (especially if they don't know the details of your riding environment) and expect it to be right. My impression has been that HMF's published jetting "suggestions" are only right for the densest of air. Makes sense though--that protects HMF from people running their engines dangerously lean.

Tell us more about the elipticle version...I have never heard of that from HMF.

well its like a white brothers shaped cannister with the same round end cap but it gives more bottom end and is throatier, and runs good. go to the HMF site and on their they have them in either E or R when you order the E is eliptical and the R is round.

I have a slip on hmf sport series with a 158 main jet and a k & n filter and wow does it help that 400ex. I can stick with a 450r on one of our local tracks. ill n ever buy any other. my neighbor has a 400ex with different cam, high comp piston, port and polish, and full white bros and i can stick right with him. that is just my thoughts though.

Looks like they don't make them for the 400ex, but they do make them for the 450r.

first off, i was saying that thinking u had a 400ex. i apperantly wrong. next thing, it would prolly work fine if u shelved the airbox lid. just do the plug check. it the plug is a light chocolate brown color ur jetting is good. if it's white or a very light color then ur lean. if it is black then ur rich and if it is wet then ur really rich.

Hey man, for starters you can go here: http://www.atvriders.com/articles/jetting.html Read through that a few times and you will start to get a good understanding. You will be surprised how picky your quad is when it comes to jetting. What elevation are you at by the way? I would think that a 170 is a lil big for no more mods than you have. I would start with a 155 main. It is better to start rich and get leaner. Keep in mind the temperature change from early morning to mid afternoon because it will make a difference. Jetting is never 100% correct at ALL times.
