hey guys i can trade my 426ex (mods in sig) for a 86' 250r. Description is: It has been totally restored to new condition it has a brand new motor not rebuilt, shocks, plastics. it has many after market parts. this bike is very fast and fun to ride. looks as good as it runs. the frame, a arms, and swing arm are all painted to match the bike. i will add an extra motor. i will also throw in alot of extra parts. i have 2 extra front tires on rims and 2 back tires on rims i will throw in with it also.

My question is how will this compare to my 426? I mostly ride woods and sand pits..

maybe you should ask the people over in the 250r forum. they might be albe to shead some light. but if i was you i would keep the extra tires because most of the time you can use them on the other fourwheeler

I used to have an R and my 426ex is about the closest thing I have ridden as far as handling, the R was a little quicker. The four stroke is easier to ride with utility quads and slower riders and tight woods.

That's a tough one. Performance is probably pretty similar. The biggest difference is gonna be the way in which they achieve that performance. In my experience with both quads, the 250R is better for 8/10ths and up type riding. Where the 400EX is better for when you don't want to ride quite that maniacally. It's not that the 400EX won't do 8/10ths riding well--but the harder you push them the more the 250r's qualities start to shine.

I've had a 440ex and a 265r (currently) and the r is so much quicker and handles much much better. The thing is, with riding in the woods, a 4 stroke would be much easier to control, but once you get the hang of the 2-stroke power.....the woods is sometims to most fun place to be cause it's such a challenge. My 250r is set up for mx, but the last 250r i had was a great woods bike. And, if you set it up right and learn how to ride it, tight trails won't be a problem at all.

ya handling the 2 stroke isnt the problem...i had a rm125 before my 400 and i rode that through trails so a 250r shouldnt be a problem.. how much different is a piped and filtered 250r vs a 265?

In my opinion (and I have riden Rs and EXs) keep the EX. For the riding that you describe the EX would be more suited to both types of riding. The Rs are fast bikes and super fun to ride but you need a place where you can keep it aired out a bit. My old R was ok to ride on trails and in the woods but the EX is waaaay more fun to me.

Well, I have had both...so...

Anyone who says 2 strokes aren't meant for trails and 4 strokes are...well...I'm willing to bet I could go about 3 times faster through trails on the 250r then the 426. Main reason? The 250r just Moves! It'll take off whenever you want it too, and I loved it for that. No hesitation. Just pin it.

I'd do it man. I had one, traded for this 400ex, and now I want a 250r again! Just give it some time to get used to. When I got rid of it I though I'd never miss it, boy was I wrong!

if i was in your situation i would keep the 426ex for two main reasons.

1. the 250r is going to be more expensive to run. 2 strokes use more gas and also you have to mix your gas so every take full is going to cost more then i would for your ex.

2. The 250rs are starting to get pretty old now and the up keep might be more. you might have to buy parts more often or just working on it more then your ex.

dont get me wrong i would love a 250r. I have always wanted one and always well. but with the gas prices and the age of the 250r's i would rather have a newer 4 stroke. i would either keep the 426ex or try to get a 450.

I have just sold a 250r and bought a 400 ex, if you are riding dunes and trails I would stick with the EX, its power delivery is more suited for this, the R is a great machine but really is an MX machine and requires more work to keep it on the boil, they done like plodding around in tight woods etc, just my opinion based on my recent experience.
