i want to change my front sprocket for more bottom end, would i need to change the back aswell, would i go down a tooth

Yes, you would want to drop a tooth on the front sprocket. You would want to add a tooth on the back sprocket for more bottom end. for example 15/38 to a 14/39.

You can either change the front, back, or both. You don't necessarily need to change both. Throughout my history with my 400ex I have used stock (15/38), 15/39, and 14/39 now. It all depends on how much low end you want and how much top end you can sacrifice.

whats an average speed lost for going down an tooth and is it an noticable gain for bottom end

If you drop a tooth in the front and keep the stock on the back, you will not loose all that much top end, maybe going from a top speed to 67 to 62 or so. It all depends on where you ride man, if you are in the trees all the time, I would say definately drop a tooth on the front, if you are on long open stretches keep it the way it is for more top speed. Entirely up to you and your riding style. And, yes dropping a tooth on the front will be noticable, definately.
