Hey,

i'm searching for a good, cheap (under $1500) used quad. tall order i know, but i'm searching and considering all possibilities. my riding buddies include Scrambler 500's, a Raptor, 300/400ex's and do mostly trail riding. so i can't deal with anything slow or i'd get left behind and that's embarrasing. so now that you know where i'm coming from, you can see where this post is going. :D

i came across an ad for an '87 250x. bored .060 over, and some mods, and needs carb work, $700. i'm not really asking your opinion on this quad, cause i don't have much info on it's condition.

a 250x bored .060 over w/hi-comp piston, cam, appropriate carb, air filter, pipe, and any other easy mods . . . how fast would it be? what would it be comparable too?

thanks,
bigmac

beleive it or not a 250x is faster than a 300ex because it runs a higher compression piston, lighter and I think bigger intake ports. My friend has a 250x and does some pretty crazy stuff with it. So it would pry be comparable to a mildly modded 300ex.

Hey,

so still no chance of touching a stock 400ex? :(

also, in reading the archives, the 250x tops out at 55mph. is that with 20" tires? so 22" tires would push it up to around 60mph right? would it still have strong power with those tires? (rather have 22"s for ground clearance than change the gearing).

Hey,

so if a 250x is faster than a 300ex to begin with, why is a modded out 250x only comparable to a mildly modded 300ex?

Id say jump on that deal man, if its in good condition, and hasnt been beat to death then its a good deal. Carb work is easy-smeasy.You can get used carbs off ebay for like 30-35 bucks anyway if that one is crap. let us know what it looks like when you check it out.

I find it hard to belive that the 250x is faster than the 300ex. I have on myself and i have killed every 250x that ever tried to compete, mods and no mods. And buy the way, a heavily moded 300EX, or 250X will beat a stock 400EX.

Hey,

well i'd be happy with 400ex power. but what do you call "heavily modded?" guess i need to give the guy a call and go check it out. then i'll know a little better exactly what mods it has, and what kind of power it's putting out.

btw: will a 400EX carb work on a 250x? any gains?

thanks,
bigmac

Yep, 250's will do it. the lower weight will greatly benefit more then about 40CC's And, it has a higher comp. piston stock, and alittle better cam from what ive heard.

I dont think the pistons are different in the 2 quads, its the stroke.
and the x has a kick start

thatst he only two changes that were made i think.
I believe the cams where the same in both models.

On my ole 300ex with FMF exhaust and 18" holeshots, I can beat a 250x with a dg exhaust and 21" mud tires (not shure what kind, lol). I can beat him in any part of the powerband, including top speed even with the smaller tires.

The Stock Cam On A 250x Has A Higher Lift & More Duration Than A 300ex. :macho

so a 250x cam in a 300ex would make a nice lil drop in cam, right?

Yes It Would Be An Improvement Over The Stock 300ex Cam , But Personally If I Was Going To Go Through The Work To Do That I Would Upgrade To A Web Dropin Cam & Really Notice The Difference.

& Also I Meant To Post It Earlier.... A Modded 250x Will Most Deffinetely Beat A Stock 300ex & Most Mildly Modded 300ex's. :blah (Of Course Driver Has To Be A Competant One Too...)

A 250X came stock with the same 22" rear tires as a 300EX. The weight difference between the two is 26lbs with the difference being the battery and starter on the 300EX. The suspension is the same on both bikes. The compression is more on the 250X and combined with the 26lbs weight advantage makes both bikes pretty equal (a 300EX only has 282cc's). Sounds like a good deal as long as there isn't any major problems with the machine. Oh yeah, the 400EX carb will work on the 250X, just get a 350X air boot to mate the carb to the motor which will also increase airflow. This is a pretty good mod to increase power all around. Remove the choke for even more power. I heard that the 250X cam was a little better than the 300EX cam but then again I also heard that it is not true. I haven't personally seen any specs on either cam so I don't know for sure.

Hey,

ahhh man, i'm always a day or two too late on these things. i tell ya, if there's a decent deal in the local bargain trader, it's sold within 3 days or less. i called about the 250x today, but apparently it sold a few days ago. :( bummer. but there's always next week's bargain trader . . . lol

btw: thanks for all the info on the 250x!
