View Full Version : Really stiff clutch...

My clutch pull is way too stiff. I was adjusting it to see if it got any better, and by looking at the arm that comes from the engine, the one that the cable pulls, it is very smooth for about 1/8 inch then gets really tough.

A guy at the shop told me what the problem probably was when I was ordering parts for the rebuild, but I've forgotten since, and I'm really getting sick of it. I have to take my whole hand off of the bars to pull it in - it takes all four fingers. And by the time I'm done with the ride, even those fingers hurt bad, usually even into the next day.

Like I said, the mechanic said there is a part that gets worn that should be replaced, but I don't remember what it is. Does anybody know of this, or any other common problems that would cause it, or know of another way to make the pull easier? The cable is brand new, by the way.

are the clutch springs aftermarket? that will change how hard it pulls.

also go with an 89 update for the clutch...which uses a needle bearing where the rod pushes on the pressure plate (makes it alot smoother/easier).

do you have an easy pull clutch lever?

how old is the clutch cable? rusty? lubed??
