I have an 05' 400ex. I noticed the other day with the engine off I could switch the gears, without pulling the clutch in. Is this right or is something wrong. When the engine is runing everything seems to be fine when shifting through the gears.

ahha its smooth when u frist got it but if u keep doing that...plan on buyin new transmission...this is extremly bad for it....the only time I dont use a clutch is when I am going through gears on wheelies..cause i aint good enough yet to pull in clutch

It doesn't hurt a thing to switch gears with the engine off and not touching the clutch. Often you'll have to rock the quad a little (to get the gear dogs to line up) to get through all the gears.

it's fine, like mentioned.

use your clutch when it's running because it's there for a reason. if you can't help it in wheelies than i think you need more practice :D

taking the load off the tranny between clutchless gear shifts is OK, but i mean really, WTF is the point? maybe if your clutch cable broke....

well, if you can shift perfect you'll be able to get away with shifting without the clutch, but i bet 70% of your shifts arent at the perfect rpm where the gears line up perfectly so it probably grinds a little bit if you do it alot and of course this is when its running.

the syncros make up the rpm difference, but with a load on the engine, then the larger the difference the more wear you get on those syncros

Are there syncros on the 400ex tranny?

I haven't tried to shift w/o the clutch while the engine was runing. It is there for a reason. but I didn't know you could w/ the engine off. I hit the shift lever from Neu. to 1st when changing out the front sprocket. Just wanted to know if something was broke or breaking down. Like a truck or even a street bike you have to pull in the clutch.

I was thinking the same thing. I didn't think sequential transmissions had syncros. ??

BTW, any street bike should be the same way as a 400EX or any other manual shift quad.

400ex tranny's don't have syncro's.

Yeah, your fine. I think that my cousin said that he HAD to pull in the clutch on his DS or it wouldn't let him shift.

i had a yz80 and i really never used the clutch unless i was coming to a stop or rolling. and that same 80 is now in the hands of one of my griends and u know what it still has no problem shifting and we never ever had to change a clutch... on a 94.

u don't have to clutch when up shiftin as long as u let off the gas. always clutch at a stop or when downshifting

My quad doens't seem like it gets the total power out of the engine unless i use the clutch when i'm giving it hell through the gears, i rarely use the clutch to downshift, i make sure i'm off the throttle and i dont' force it to downshift. i let it go in with light foot pressure. Have never had any clutch, tranny problems.

It is gererally OK to go up in gears without the clutch but not to go down.

Going up decreases the load on the transmission.
Going down increases the load on the trasmission all at once.

when i shift i put pressure on the shifter then i smack the gas and it shifts for me really just a lil pressure on the shifter and mines a 99
