I have used the search buttom to try to find a "how to" on changing the chain and sprockets but havn't found one. I think i have a general idea but just want to make sure.

I have a 01 400ex and if anyone can lead me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

I will help you out.

1. Loosen the sprocket bolts on the rear sprocket

2. look for a master link. If you cant find one or cant get it off, just cut threw the chain.

3. Remove the chain.
Remover the right rear wheel and slide the sprocket off over the hub.

4. Take out the two bolts on the front sprocket and remove it.

5. Then re-assemble everything.

you dont need to take out the master link or cut your chain...

sounds pretty dumb to me....

im not completely familiar with the 400ex, but take off the guards and crap around your front sprocket, undo the bolt and the bent washer thing that holds it into place, and just slide the front sprocket and chain off... then you will be able to take it off the rear sprocket... and then throw your new ones on there and slide the front sprocket back on... if you go to different sizes you may have to adjust...

you wil need to split the chain to get it off of the frame and it is your left wheel, not your right

If you are putting new sprockets on you will need to change the chain.. Never run an old chain on new sprockets it will cause them all to wear out faster.. if it's the stock chain it has no master links. you will have to cut the chain or remove the swingarm to get the chain off..

at my local bike shop i bought the 2 sprockets with a DID O-ring chain. the only problem was after i cut the chain and was putting the new chain on, it was about a foot and half short.

i heard somewhere that there is suppose to be 120 links???

the chain i have has 84, if i counted correctly, so i hope they take this back or im going to be really pissed

400ex chains are 520/94

520 is the link size, 94 is the number of links

I'll PM you a link to something that might help you with maintenance...

thanks man for anything u can find

the model number on the short chain is DID 520V-86FB

so the size is right but there isnt enough links. is the second number how many links there are cause i counted 84 but i wasnt postive. i dont know why they would sell me this but it looks like they just gave me the wrong chain.

Check out rockymountainatv.com they have some sprocket/chain kits for a very nice price. Around 80$ for both sprockets and chain.
