I am purchasing a Hinson basket for my 86R and James Lucky had a blip that for 86-87 applications the crank gear had to be modified or use an 88-89 gear. Anyone know why??

I put a Hinson basket on my 86. I just had to slightly grind the corner edge on one side of the entire gear to clear the basket. (Kind of like "rounding the edge off". I do not know if I am explaining it well.) It is mentioned with the instructions you get with the basket. It was not hard to do, but I also had a air grinder. I would assume the 88-89 gear maybe already has a bevel on it to clear the basket?

The splined area on the crank is a little longer and the output gear is wider to match that. I don't remembe exactly but I think it was like .070. Just enough to hit the back corner of the Hinson basket. I've seen it a couple of times on engines I've worked on where its chewed that corner off the basket.

then the pieces of aluminum float around in the engine until race day and causes a dnf because a small piece gets stuck to your rings and you loose all compression;) musta hapened to someone once

make shure you grind the gear put it together and check, i thought i had it ground enough and found out the hard way i needed to take off a little more

There is no way aluminum from your clutch basket could make it to your rings. If it did you have much bigger problem than a little gear rubbing. The cylinder and crank are sealed off from the transmission.

hope your not serious:eek2: , because all the oil in the tranny also lubes your crank/ bottom side of the piston

Jon370R is correct. Your crank is lubed by the premix mixed with your gasoline. Tranny oil is not in the crank/cylinder area.

that would be residue from your premix

This would be correct for most 4-strokes...
