I know this if directed towards motorcycles but the message is the same.

If we don't try and keep our motorcycles and ATV under 96 db we will loose more and more places to ride.

I'm sorry but i disagree. Just like any other motorsport its very loud. quad riding, racing, play riding, freestyle, nascar, drag racing they are all motorsports and there loud. Thats what makes them fun. whatever you ride. sound db's are pretty much not heard of in okiehoma.lol well not that bad but pretty much. i've never been anywhere in okiehoma that i've had a sound check.

It is not going to be fun to sit in your garage and look at you loud quad or driving for hours just to find a place to ride.
Somebody will hear you going down the road full throttle and that somebody will not say anything to you but when it comes time to vote that will see a candidate on the ballet associated with the Serria Club and vote for them just because of your ATV / Motorcycle is pegging the db meter.

FYI most amateur motorsports do have a db limit. I agree the pro racing does not but there time will come.

Don't worry your time is coming just like the rest of us. Your arguement is that the sound is what makes it fun.....? If thats the case I guess you can sit in your garage and rev your motor because thats what its coming to.

I had an HMF on my Predator and it was pretty loud. Now on my Z400 I have my stocker, and I actually like it better. I get less dirty looks, and I'm not partially deaf when I'm done riding. My next exhaust I will willingly get one under 98Db.

The truth is, there is no benefit to having a loud exhaust aside from your personal opinion of thinking its "cool".

All motorsports are loud, so why are they just picking on us quad guys is what i'm sayin about loud, its just part of motorsports. having a loud exhaust has nothing to with thinking your cool. when your around a whole lot of riders its kinna good to have a pipe you can hear so you can shift good.

Rooster300ex, I don't have a problem with you disagreeing. But please consider this: how much longer do you think "...sound db's are pretty much not heard of in okiehoma.."??? If you want to keep the anit-quad/bike/etc. groups off your back than it's up to YOU to be proactive and not give them a reason to ruin our fun.

In my experience the environmentalist, no trails anywhere, zero emmission crowd is a VERY organized bunch. That fact represents a major threat to the activities we enjoy. What's gonna happen when you have to present a racing license in order to buy an aftermarket exhaust? Just because your neighborhood is ok with loud exhausts doesn't mean the federal government (EPA) is ok with it.

Damn...I want to write more but I'm in a big hurry...maybe later.

As far as closures are concerned, sound might not be the deciding factor, but it is definitely a contributor. The fewer reasons people have to complain, the better, in my opinion. There are a lot of young people on this forum that don't consider other people's rights, or see being obnoxious as a rebellious statement, and there's not much anyone can do about that. Those attitudes usually change with time and experience. If you're a parent, hopefully you'll have the foresight to know that buying a quiet pipe for your kid's quad is much better for the sport and other riders, even if it isn't the "coolest" pipe available. I have a White Bros on my 416, and it's even a little loud for me, although it's much more mellow than some of the other pipes out there. If you need a loud pipe to know when to shift, you need more practice.

i tell you what those friggin exhausts people are putting on their quads and thumper bikes are WAY, WAY, WAY too loud. Where I rode you can be a 1/2 mile away and you can STILL hear the damn things its awful and it attracts unwanted attention, and it's plain and simply annoying as frig.

I have the T-4 full exhaust for my 250ex and it was and still is LOUD, i've definitely lost a noticeable amount of my hearing. When riding through my backyard to get to the woods, I usually short shift to where i'm lugging the bike so i dont piss off the neighbors. I also do my part and repack my silencer once a year, if not more.

-copyguy-

so is there a sight for quad exhausts that shows their db levels? Or could we get a sticky thread on here for them? I know it'd be hard with all the different levels of mods to the engines, but even numbers against a stock engine would be a good start.

I'd like to get an HMF sport with a quiet core...is that low enough? What exactly is low enough? 98, 96, 93 db?
What is a stock 400ex at?

i would have to agree, eventually our sport will be threatened....even more than it is now. pollution, noise, destruction of the land (desert, woods, dunes, etc..) will definately be some of the argueing points. they've already started with the 2 strokes.....red sticker. part of "glamis" here in california, is off limits completely. there are groups around the vegas area who are trying to ban use of 2 stroke jetskis on lake mead. they claim the jetskis emitt too much pollution into the air and water. this is a good reason why most new jetskis (2+ seaters) are 4 strokes, and 2 stroke stand up jetskis sales are banned in california. soon there will be 4 stroke stand up jetskis. i think its already been done, just trying to make it cost effective/practical
ive seen people in my neighborhood go insane when the gardener comes around and starts up his leaf blower. something about that sounds drives people mad and they run out chasing the gardener ordering him to shut his machine off and use a hand rake. this actually made the news here.
i think it is important to consider using a system that is not as loud, yet maintains performance. who knows when that will happen....it will take some time for the environmentalist to shut us down, by then, it might be too late.

also, i think there is a lot more money involved in drag and nascar racing. those organizations have enough money grease the hands that hold the DB meter......:ermm:

It will never end, loud exhaust on four strokers, two strokers are/were way more annoying. I say shoot the Nazi enviro freaks, to loud FS to much pollution TS, we should can the whole quad industry, that'l make the Nazi's happy, then they can go pick on something else. One of the big reasons quads/dirt bikes went FS was to appease the enviro Nazi's, I see they made big progress, face the facts, you aren't going to please your enemies, I say take a baseball bat to the scumbags.

Enviro nazis? I am an avid atv enthusiast and absolutely live to ride my quad. I have an HMF slip on on my bike and will say it is pretty loud. Every one of my neighbors is cool with it, and when I dont ride here, Im on a race track. Although I ride a loud bike I at least consider my neighbors. With that said there have been some four stroke pipes that irritate the crap out of me. There is absolutley no reason to have pipes that loud. Dont say its just enviro nazis because I know other atv riding friends of mine who love to ride but still dislike loud pipes.

When I was on two strokers, 25 years worth, biatch, biatch biatch, loud noisy, dirty, blah blah. Now the four strokers are here, what do I hear, biatch, biatch biatch, loud, noisy, blah blah blah, this crap is old, I've come to realize, I'm not going to make peace with my enimies. the Nazi freaks can kiss my A. If your pipe isn't too loud, then they'll pick on you for making dust and going to fast, are you getting the big picture of what the agenda of the enviro Nazi's is. We should all dump the quads and get mountain bikes, or better yet, hiking boots.

I feel that loud pipes can be bad and make important people mad mayor, state rep, cop, etc. But at the same time alot of the BEST performing pipes Sparks, Yoshi, Rossier, HMF, are loud very loud compared to stock. Why not have a quiet core for your exhaust?? Because it ' cuts' back the power????? Unless you are in a competitive racing event at an established track does that 1-2 or 1hp really matter??? With my experience a quiet coer limits the flow a little which increases backpressure which increases torque, which is what trail riders should like! Now don't get me wrong I have a TC Racing shorty pipe, which is EXTREMELY loud, but it also has a disc set-up. So at the races I run an open race cap, after that when I wanna ride I put on my discs ( quiet cores ) it takes me 1 or 2 minutes and when I 'm done it idles like stock and sounds like stock until about 1/2 throttle or more and with the discs one it has alot more torque, and I can barely keep the front wheels down:devil: I know at the race track loud will help you in the mid-top which is how I like it. This is the way I can have my cake and eat it too !!!!!!!!! Because the kind of people that get VERY offended take more powerful measures by voting or persuasing higher people to get their way. Thats the only way senior citizens still have power, because voting is one of the things they do to socialize!! hahaha

I'm not one to be bashing quads in a quad forum, go to the Siera club forum if you wanna bash quads. It doesn't make sense to bash quads in a quad forum. Curtus Sparks knows exactly how loud his X-6 pipes are, go tell him he's making the quad sport look bad.

If you are riding somewhere around a lot of houses you can't have a loud exhuast. That seems pretty obvious to me. If I was at my house and all I could hear was a loud exhaust I would be pissed too! People can't be riding around there development with a loud exhuast annoying the whole neighborhood! And for using it as an exuse to close down trails is rediculous. If it wasn't the noise then they would find something else.

You don't see cops pulling over street rod Honda's, Mitsubishi, ect, cars with loud aftermarket exhaust, why is it quads and dirt bikes get slammed, high performance street bikes are loud(stock exhaust), quad riders never get a break, someones always biachng. sigh. wrong. my neighbor got pulled over ONLY because he has a good looking import with an aftermarket exhaust. Cop said it was "too large an exhaust for the vehicle"...luckily it got dismissed.

Unfortunately to most people loud = reckless and destructive...even when it isn't the case.

I do plan on getting an aftermarket exhaust for my quad, but it will have a quiet core insert. That way I get some more performance with the least chance that someone will become so annoyed that I won't be able to use it...

around here it all depends what you are driving. my 89 escort has mustang wheels, custom dual exhaust, intake, hid lights, fancy paint job, ect...its a cop magnet. i got pulled over for my dual exhaust. the cop said it did not come like that from the factory so it is illegal. same with my nova it is loud, wide and black. i got pulled over in that for it being loud and my taillights not being bright enough...hello the car is 34 years old it doesnt have led taillights. however ive never got cited for any of it cause they know they are full of S___t. same goes with our quads we dump more money in to them to make them stand out and be different we are asking for attention. i just started riding my 250 ninja that i bought and im constintly having people ride my *****, blowing past me, i think it makes feel good knowing the can pass a crotch rocket. ppl at red lights telling my to ride a wheelie, do a burnout. they think cause thats the kind of bike you ride you should be like other idiots on the road and do the same thing. it comes down to what you ride or drive and how it grabs ppl's attention.

Why? Because people who are not responsible go and ride where they're not supposed to. They tear up someone's property, and if it's a loud quad people have something else to complain about. I don't mind loud, but I won't put a super loud pipe on my quad. The thing that ticks me off is when a guy that lives acrossed my lake rides at 10:00PM with a pipe that is probably reading in at 105 dec. This really happens and I have almost called the cops on more that one occasion.
My point is that you should respect the property you're on and the people around you.

For those who are using the NASCAR and other motor sports argument are a bit off base IMO....:ermm:

Most often those events are held at one location (closed course)once a year and probably have a special permit to allow for more noise during that weekend.

I live about 40 miles from Watkins Glen...yeah the road course...

NASCAR and Indy cars can be heard from about 5 miles away (across the valley at my bro in laws place)...

BUT they inject one heck of a lot of cash into the local economy when they come to town...this area lives for those two weekends...for the money, the neighbors can live with the noise...heck I think everyone that lives by the track sells firewood all during the summer to the race car fans that come into town...

So yeah, NASCAR and Indy are special cases...they aren't the neighbor's kid with a Sparks cut to 4" long rippin through his front yard across the street.

you know there is no point in getting so upset/angry that it makes you wanna buy the loudest pipes out there and rev it out at the wee hours of the night just to piss off those complaining......

someone said that until the time comes when more restrictions are in effect.....by that time it will be too late. the ball would be rolling and it will be much too difficult to stop. and there will be no help from the aftermarket suppliers either.

i dont know where that guy lives, but around where i live, if your exhaust is over a given db, too low, stereo too loud, windows too dark, wing to high/big, crap hanging from the rearview, wheels are too small(lowriders), hydraulics, hitting air bags will on the street......, its a ticket. of course, the more attractive your car is, the more it stands out and is targeted. i think that muscle cars more than imports get a little more slack because of their history.
anyhow, this thread has gotten real long and over what? everyone here loves to ride, goes without saying.

Exactly:) Thanks for adding the economic influence, I had ment to include that but it slipped my mind...

What I was mainly trying to get across is the 'major' motorsports are a relative rarity whereas the average quad rider is every weekend and sometimes everyday event. This is what people hear and complain about. Yes, they do complain about the major races as well as the airports. Around here they are trying to get Portland International Raceway moved, which is not far from the airport, not a cheap endeavour :ermm:

Also, at the dunes lately the riding boundry has been getting closer :ermm:

i dont know where that guy lives, but around where i live, if your exhaust is over a given db, too low, stereo too loud, windows too dark, wing to high/big, crap hanging from the rearview, wheels are too small(lowriders), hydraulics, hitting air bags will on the street......, its a ticket. of course, the more attractive your car is, the more it stands out and is targeted. i think that muscle cars more than imports get a little more slack because of their history.
anyhow, this thread has gotten real long and over what? everyone here loves to ride, goes without saying.

Of course.
