What breather are you talking about? Your link doesn't work for me.

Also, your IM box is full--I couldn't respond to your IM.

ETA: Nevermind--linky now works.

You can run without that if you want. Extend the hose and run it into the carb boot or they do make little breather filters that do away with running the crankcase breather into the intake.

uhhhh--you've got to plug the hole in the intake boot!

On the end of the breather you should put a little filter, like this:

Sounds like you've found what you're looking for.

But to answer your question: all the little filter is for is to let crankcase pressure out without letting dirt and debis in. And yes, that hole must not be open to the air no matter what you do.

Your IM box is full so I couldn't answer anyway. Here's what I tried to send you though:

A little bit of both but mostly it blows out. As the piston moves up and down the air pressure inside the crankcase goes up and down. That fluctuation in pressure needs a place to relieve itself. That's what the crankase breather does. It basically lets pressure in and out of the crankcase so there is never a possitive or negitive pressure in there.

The little filter is mostly to prevent any crud from working it's way into the crankcase. Hooking the breather up to the intake also prevents this. The other reason they hook the breather up to the intake is for EPA emmision reasons. Any bad gases (or even oil) that gets pushed out the breather just gets sucked back into the engine rather than vented into the atmosphere.
