Pull down on the top of the shock spring then move the c-ring up or down in the grooves to adjust your preload. Move the c-ring down for more preload and up for less preload. It helps to have the quad on a stand when you are doing this.

This is kind of a stupid question i think, but correct me if i'm wrong, is the preload the ammount of shock travel when just the weight of the bike and rider is on it? thats the only thing that i could come up with in my head that sounded a little bit logical.

It means how much tension is put on the spring when it is extended. The more preload, the stiffer the shock will be.
