yes you should change the oil filter. i dont know why people run diesel oil but i say just stick with what you know works. I run Spectro 5w40 platinum synthetic in mine and it runs great.

Honda has a synthetic blend oil you know you can trust

I went to my local dealer and talked to a few techs and the department manager. They led me to AMSOIL 10-40 and an OEM filter. They also suggested the Rotella you mentioned. Its much cheaper than AMSOIL (I payed $8.99 per quart)

i wouldnt buy anything from honda. they slap a honda sticker on the oil bottle and they scare newbies into thinking that if they dont use the honda oil it with break. any synthetic will run pretty good. just go down to your atv shop and ask them for a good synthetic.

I have heard mixed reviews about the rotella. I would just stick with some type of motorcycle oil. An oil change on a 400ex won't cost much no matter what oil you get.

well i ended up going through with it and using the rotella mainly because my step dad uses it on his tractor trailers so its avaliable any time.. no regrets with it yet.

Itll work.......but u should use a motorcylce oil that is designed for the high RPMs your pushing.

Just a quick update on the AMSoil I was recommended. I've put in some a few hard rides (high rpm frequent 1-2 gear small circle, lots of 1st and 2nd gear wheelies, and launches) and this oil has YET to change color. Guys, this stuff rocks! I will always recommend AMSoil if their product continues to perform as it has.

The color of an oil really is meaningless to it's function. It is more a factor of soot particles. One way to look at the dark oil is that if it never turned dark, it wouldn't be moving any particulates to the filter where they can be trapped.

I run Maxima in all my/family's quads. I have had no problems. Accually my banshee transmission seems better. I don't undertsand why ppl run diesel.

I use Amsoil 10-40 and a OEM filter also.
