Can u replace the master cylinder in the 400ex with a 450r the parts look interchangable with part numbers from bike bandit. I was thinking with higher line pressure maybe from the 450r and new CM44 pads and stainless steel lines will dramatically improve the front feel of my 400ex. The part numbers (135281-001)450r and (135280-001)400ex, everything else is pretty much the same. The swap would cost $40.00, I'm just not sure the 450r has higher line pressure but I would think so.

Installing the 450r master cylinder will make huge difference in braking feel,in conjunction with the braided steel lines it will be incredible.Do it!!.It is easy, cheap and a perfect retrofit

Could you do this on a 300ex also.

Does doing this swap really make a huge diffrence? I have a 400ex and i thought the breaks were great. But your saying they can get better?

yes this mod works prefect on a 300ex,and it makes a great improvment in braking. It is cheap-easy and it really works well.
I am really surprised that more people are not doing this mod
In addition if you add braided steel lines they are unbeatable on a ex for the cost!
Try it-IT WORKS GREAT
Higher line pressure =Improved braking

does this only work in the front? or will it work for the rears? thanks

Why in the world does anyone use the front brakes? My 400ex is 6 years old and still has every bit of pad on them. I NEVER use them. Trouble waiting to happen and now and even harder clamping piston/caliper to add to the mix....no thanks.

Can you say ENDO?

do you dune mostly? maybe in the sand it would tend to dig in a bit and give you the sensation of endoing.....

on the dirt, you have WAY more stopping power from the front than the back brakes. like on a car. sure the nose dips a little, but the wheels would just lock up before you go over the bars....unless your on a hill....

how can't you use your front brakes???? I never use my rear brakes, atc200x, atc250r, crf450r quad, xr250r, the front brakes on all of them are so much better. the rear brakes on my xr250r just slide, especailly on the street, the front actaully stops it. on my quad and atc's the rear just stalls the motor, the front does the stopping. Get used to using the front brakes and your stopping will improve and so will your times(if you do mx). I learned to use my front brakes after riding in the snow and I tried to stop and slid into a tree, I used to fronts after that and have sence then.

Whatever blows your skirt is OK with me. I've touched the fronts a few times and felt like I was going over the bars.

you were sqeezing to hard :) uneed to go light with the front brakes or u will go over the bars or just slide and have no control.

you must not ride hard enough if you never use the front brakes. I lock the rear up and hit the front very hard on the mx track.

i would believe someone going over the bars from hitting the front brakes......on the street:rolleyes:

if you ride standing up, and hit the fronts without leaning back, i think momentum would want to push you over the bars. sure, if you wanted to pull a 'nose-y' (what ever the wheelie is called when on the front 2 only)... it prolly wouldnt be too hard. but I know for sure you can slam on the fronts and the rears together/individually, HARD, while leaning back....i felt the nose dip a little, but never thought i was going over.
the rears lock up, slide and give you little/no control over steering......

hey man, you dont wanna use the fronts, cool:macho .....
ride how you like or feel comfortable....:blah:

MOst of the breaking power is in the front not the back

Mr. Joe Byrd says it is 70% front brakes and 30% rear brakes. And I went to his school, thats how i know that. I never used to use my front brakes either, but once I started to, ive gotten quicker lap times b/c you can break later. And when you use your front brakes, you dont lose traction and your rear end wont sway. Use the front brakes, they really do help.

I guess if your in sand the rears might be OK to use, but on anything else the rear brakes do virtually nothing. The only time I really use the rears is to initiate a slide into a corner or in the air to transition the quad for a landing. Other than that the 450R stock front brakes are phenominal, and my lap times improved greatly just from the better brakes alone on the 450 vs my old EX.

what do I need to use to do this swap on my 300ex??? Just the resivor??? Also, I never use my rear brakes unless I am stuck on a hill or going down a hill.

The 450r and 400ex offer no line pressure advantage over the other. SS lines will help due to the fact they do not expand when they are under pressure. The only benefit I can see in making a swap would be for the adjustable brake lever and they can be had for less then $25.
