you have too much time on your hand my friend...oh yeah any money give me some.

ya, I have to much time. Not as much scence I got a GF. As for to much money,, far from that. I work my but off for the past 3 summers. During the school year I have a part time job that barley pays for gas/dates/fourwheeler parts that brake.
My dad does pay for alot of my fourhweeler parts, moast every time I buy a part like a sprocket or somthing he buys it. But the bigger stuf I buy, shocks, engine, a-arms, swing arm, ext.

I have a race on the 18th this month. Think I can get it done it time?

I think so, this is what my budies yfz that I was fixing looked like, Race was 4 days away when I took this picture, Cases where split on the motor. I had it together in 2 days with no shop manual (backordered).

I started on the frame today, Only so much I can do before I get the engine.

But I discovered some cracks in my frame:eek2:  :eek2: :eek2:

They are neer where the front shocks mount on. I made some sick gussits useing a plasma cutter and iorn worker at my cousins welding shop. I wanted to stamp stars in them, make it look like a LSR, I attemped to cut a star into a peace of steel. looked more like a circle with spikes.

1fst400
06-02-2006, 08:55 PM
cracks.

1fst400
06-02-2006, 08:57 PM
These cracks must me new in the last 3 months. I dident notice them when I put it together from the frame up then.

400exMO
06-02-2006, 09:59 PM
Just asking, how do you fix a crack like that? It'd be ugly to weld a bead around. And I don't think you could get any backing with that tiny of a crack.

1fst400
06-03-2006, 05:23 AM
I will probly bring it over to the welding shop. They have a TIG welder there. On the tig welder I can weld A very nice looking bead/ invisible. That gussit will hold it all in place pretty good. only thing is when you weld around a peace of tube it ruins its strength. Notice moast all welds on frames go in line with the tube.

when you weld around the tube it will crack rait next to the weld moast times.

1fst400

did some welding today. got all the gussits in for the front end.

I put some designs into the gussits, trying to be fancy

are you sure? I've taken seminars on building truss, the grid looking thing you hang theatrical lights on-like at concerts, they weld all the way around tubing....the key is heat control. you'll need less heat from about half way around to finish the seam due to the pipe heating up from when you started the weld.....

1fst400
06-04-2006, 09:05 PM
your probly right, Just what I heard fom a guy. Im 16 year old kid, how much could I posibly know.

After puting the gussits in today I decided not to weld the crack at all. the gussit should hold it plenty. and I will be able to keep an eye on the crack so I will know imediatly if the diffrent engine is puting to much stress on the frame. Im not going to pc the frame for a cupple weeks of riding.

zedicus00
06-05-2006, 05:57 AM
you really should weld the crack, hes right though after you get a good beed started pull the tip off it a little farther so you push less heat into the tubing. or you can do it in half inch blasts, weld, let it cool completly, weld, let it cool completly. just be very carefullwhen you pick up where you left off its easy to poke holes when starting off at the end of a weld....

1fst400
06-05-2006, 07:57 AM
I hear ya on the whole welding thing. I took a welding class actually, it was 2 time per week for a month or so. It was at a colege, full of adults. Me and my dad took it.

I had the welder set fairly high for the tubing on the frame. That way I could move along at a diecent speed. Transfering less heat throu out the frame. When the tubing looked like it was getting to hot like it was about to put a hole, I aimed the tip more twards the gussit piece because it was thicker steel it soaked up the heat.

Problem when you pull the tip back it doesent get to good of penetration and the metal cracks off from the weld.

not bad...Im thinking of doing the same thing. ill will probably get the motor next summer and during the winter i will tare it down and gusset it send it out for pc. o and how hard it it to extend the kicker? i think im going to have all the mounts done by jbracing though.. im going to take a fabrication/welding class for the next couple of years 5 days a week for like 3 years. so realy once i get the motor i can do the fabrication like its nothing plus the instructer is friends with my dads side of the family and my mom works with a woman whos husband owns a big wleding company.

I am useing the 450r quad motor. No kick start extendor needed. It has a foward kick. only reason that im realy useing this motor is availibility and cost. It was there and at a good price.

hello 1fst400

i did that conversion a few weeks ago. it was much easyer than i first thought. kick starter will work but it is a pain in the @*#@. it wont really tuck in right. if i can help you out let me know. my pics are here http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=227736. once i was done with the mounts the bike was finished in 3 days if you see the dates on my pics from eng in frame to track. good luck !! rustee..........

hello ohsobad_chevy

for my self we wanted to have something diffrent. for the price that it cost me to do this i cant buy a 450r in race ready condition. the 400 was already there untill we blew the motor.the machine is lighter than a 450r /shorter and not as tall and has, i feel a better steering geometry. the bike flys and handels extremly well for tt and flat track. that is what we built it for. and we are giving fellow 450r guys as well as yfz guys fits out there. they cant stay low on the track under extreem power like we can. but we do own a 04 450r also and we love that bike. but it is no match for this little spark plug. just my 2 cents. rustee.........

ps we have even been told we are cheating!! i love it.

how much work was it to get the motor to mount up?

1fst400
06-16-2006, 08:49 PM
so far I have spent about

5$ on cut off wheels.
I used scrap steel. but probly 30$ worth of steel.
10$ on misc hose clamps and hose for intake.

Tonight I got all the motor mounts made. I just need to sand the Powder coat off the frame and weld them on.

how much work was it... well if you know how to weld, its real easy.

the rear shock resivor does hit the engine. the air box does need to be cut and moved back. Adaptor from carb to air boot must be made, real easy. Just a peace of 2-1/2 in pipe with hose clamps and hose.
The radiator doesent fit as good as I would like, To tall... I guess a 250R one works better, I just angled it forward some.

Oil cooler lines had to be bent to get it to fit somewhere.

Hole had to be cut in plastic for kick starter.

DROVE IT TODAY.

woot woot, thing goes prety good. Love the way it handles. Started 1st and 2nd kick no problems. I dont event have the hot start buton hooked up yet.

I did several drag races vs a 06 R on payvment. In a parking lot, so there was only enough room to get mabie hight 4th gear. We Swaped riders. whole 9 yards. We came up with that, well first off I'm the best at drag racing out of my budies... and that my quad is behind about 1/2 quad length by 4th gear.

I have some vids of me riding it/ drag racing. CRAPY vid. But youll get the point.

Your quad turned out nice...Are you happy w/the 450r motor or do you think you wish you wouldve went w/the yz or crf motor?

1fst400
07-02-2006, 07:30 PM
Only reason I would have wanted the crf motor was power. This motor has plenty of that, I wont need much more for quite a while.

VID.

Keep in mind in the vid, I was on the red quad ( mine) my budie was on his 06 450r. Keep in mind that he weighs 120 lbs... I weigh 170. thats why he beets me by more like 1 length, when it was 1/2 lenths with equal weight riders.

i dont know whats all in the 450 motor. if its just a pipe then i can see how it would be the same cause my 440 can beat a piped 450, that was when i had the stock carb on it now i have the 39 fcr that i bought from 1fst400, but havent raced anything since i put that on.

Look good man. You can use the stock trx headpipe and slip on with no cutting. I dont know why you needed to do that to your intake either. I used my stock 400 air box in stock locatin and just
hoged out the air boot a bit so it stays on the 450 carb.

The oil cooler you can unbolt and flip the lines to give you more length to mount the cooler in front of the rad. Also mounted the coolant puke tank on top if the rad ,fits right in there and to check the level all you need to do is pop the hood.:p

The top motor mount your missing , i used stock trx450r lower engine mounts fliped upside down. I also used a rear 450 shock fliped around. Nice build!!!! Only if there was a way to fix that dammn kickstarter,i hate the way it looks on my quad!

Heres a lil vid of a jump i made up last week testing out my setup..
