Ok, thinking about picking a 99' 400ex or should I say 440ex. I will list what it has on it and then the price, please tell me if you think it is a deal or not considering everything is in good working order. The current owner has only owned it for a year, he said it is his spare quad, he rides a 250r and doesn't use this one much so would rather just have the money.

440 motor (don't know much about this, are there more then one company that makes kits for this, is there stuff I should look for etc. I don't want to buy a bike with an engine that's a piece or impossible to get parts for. If someone could give me the 101 treatment I would appreciate it.)

JD performance Arms, he said they are +2 wider and +1 forward
Works triple rate shocks
Duncan Exhaust
White Plastics Maier

He said he thinks the swing arm was shortened 1" but wasn't sure and he said what ever it was it is JD also

Said it had a +2 axle with some aftermarket hubs
Comes with a full set of sand tires and rims, paddles for the rear and those bald tires for the front that have the ridge

The asking price is $3500, would you say fair price or not?

I can get a stock 2000 400ex for 2500 and then I would need paddles, exhaust etc. so to me the 3500 seems right up my ally. I was thinking I was going to buy a new quad (one of the 3 450's) but with this having the wider suspension and bigger motor I can literally spend about half on a this quad.

Thanks in advance - Morgan

oh believe me I am gonna try, but he seems pretty solid firm on the price.

Anyone have some input as to the 440?

Don't know about the 440, but if he doesn't even know what the swingarm length is I would be a little leary. That to me says that he might have bought it used himself. If that's the case, you will never know the condition of the motor unless you tear it apart.
I do Know that CT, LRD, and Curtis Sparks all make good big bore 400EX's, But that's all I know. Also you didn't list if it has an aftermarket cam or not. For a big bore(especially a 440) you need a cam that is designed for the bigger motor. If it's a stock cam, then you will need to buy a cam, prefferably a Hot Cams Stroker Cam.

what kind of reliability ratio is with the 440s?

When I asked him who made it I couldnt understand his response (damn cell phones) but it ended in him saying "D" so I a guessing its LRD, I asked him twice and hate when people ask me the same thing over and over so I left it alone.

Is there a way to know with out opening the engine if it has the stock cam or not?

He is the second owner so its understandable if he doesnt know everything.

Here is the only pic I have. I like the White plastics

You dont need an aftermarket cam to have a 440 when i bought my quad it was a 440 and it didnt have a cam.

Anyways 3500 sounds like an good deal, if you dont like it you could probably part it out and make a couple hundred on it too. If I was you I would offer him 3k and then bargain up from there.

how do you guys think the 440 would do against a stock 450. Would it be able to hang around in the lower gears?

JB racing just sold one of there 440's for $2000. It had a fresh poder coating job on every part and every part you can bolt up to it from JB, Baldwin and Hetrick. The market has fallen out of them so bad that there is no way that anyone should pay more that 2.5k for one. I'd keep looking cuz there are way beter deals out there, and for 3k your just about looking at a 04 450r price range.

it will hang with it through 3rd, but the 450r will be in second the whole time.

I can only wish quads were priced like that around here. I still have yet to see a 450 in my area for less than 4500 and that 4500 was a deal. Quads / Everything is just more expensive in Southern California. Even if I did find the 04 450r for my price range I would have to pass since I need electric start for the Ole Lady. the average 400ex 2001-04 with a pipe and some paddles goes for around 4k still.

If anyone has or knows of a good / better deal in my area please let me know.
