I just installed onmy 05 450R a yosh full system, K&N filter (no airbox lid) and rejetted the carb. I installed a 175 main jet and the bike runs great. I noticed after riding it for several hours that the exhaust head pipe near the exhaust port is turning blue. Is this normal or am I running it to lean? Any help would be great.

Thanks.

Normal for most aftermarket pipes to turn blue, the stainless pipe most use is a thinner guage than stock making it turn colors easier. Check jetting as always tho.

not one person thus far in this thread has said its normal cause they checked on the dyno with A/F sniffer test.

I dyno so many times, some many quads, with so many pipes and none of them have puple-ish header. This is a sign from a lean pilot jet.. This is not normal, but will not hurt anything as long as your needle and main are in..

hope this helps.

agree. I am not the best mechanic around but I do know that 90% of the people only change the Main jet (if that) when they put a pipe on a quad. That is not correct. You have to adjust/change the needle setting/pilot ect to get your quad perfect. It took me weeks of riding to get my banshee perfect! My friends make fun of me because I took so much time doing this, but My mild banshee motor beats alot of Big Bore banshees due to it is perfect and they didn't take the time to test and tune.

Thats why my next quad will be EFI:D

EFI sounds nice but whats the fun in it?

How can all this color and overheating issues of the header be caused by only the pilot. All the riding is on the needle and main, those are the lean ones prolly. I have a 50 pilot in my carb with the set up I have now, 2 turns on the screw, C12/91 fuel still purples. Anyway, unless someone with lean jetting just sits idling for some time seems funny. Cheap steel, stainless, or coating causes this look too. Look at car headers, and their EFI, with much more airflow across the metal than an idling quad.

I dunno though, I guess the dyno is my next riding grounds.

P.S. Does anyone have a clean up idea for this? I know it's in the metal but I've hear of automotive transmission oil helping to clean up the staining or any oxidation.

I have to agree with chad 502 the hottest my header pipe has ever got,is at an idle.red hot accually, cold day with stock pilot, put in 45 pilot and did not happen again.

PS when your idling your usually not moving witch will allow the pipe to not cool down. the air going by the header really cools it down.!!!!!!!!!
