Is it possible to polish the rear axle on a 400ex and have it NOT rust? Has anyone polished it and then clear coated with something? If so, what did you use?

Its steel, dont do it. No matter how much clear coat you put on it is just gonna chip or peel off. It will just turn into a big rusty mess.

I would hate to pay the $$ to have it chromed and then have it chip though. I was thinking about preping it real good, primeing it , and using a metallic silver rustoleum or hammerite paint. If it chips...paint it again I guess??

I painted my axel and my frame. It don't really chip that much but when i does i touch it up.

Or what you could do is just take a 3M pad and some polish, put your quad on a jack, start it and put it in first gear so the axle spins. Then just hold the 3m pad on the axle and move it back and forth, i just did it yesterday and it looks really nice, ill take a pic later. The only thing i don't know is how long the look will last, but it only takes about 10 minutes, so i wouldn't mind doing it after every race.

I actually did the same thing but put it in 4th gear, and used several different grits of sand paper going up to about 600 wet. It looked GREAT! but that is exactly what I was wondering.......What is it going to look like after the first ride??
I am sure it will rust pretty fast but I wanted to coat it with something to protect the metal. I just said screw it and roughed it up again, primed and painted it a metallic silver. Still looks beter than it did before.
