start it the same you would start anything in gear pull the clutch in

You have to cut the wire at the cdi.

it sure is a pain in the *** to have to keep kicking it out of reverse to start it, especially if your trying get it out of some mud and your not sittin on it.

Not sure if this will help, but you just need to figure out what will ground the starter (like when the clutch is in) for reverse, it will probaly make it so you can start it without the clutch(not good) but then you'll be able to start in reverse.

I got a SRP rev box off of ebay($60) and have not had the problem since. Makes it so there is no rev limiter in reverse either.

I know you said you got the new cdi box and everything but i just want to tell you the answer 2 your question if anybody else needs it. so take your hood off. locate your CDI box. its a black box with 2 connectors plugged into it. 1 connector has 4 wires, the other connector has 2 wires. on the 4 wire connector you will have a gray with black stripe wire.peel the tape back if needed and snip the gray/black wire.leave enough wire just incase you wanna splice it back together at some point.tape the ends of thewires so they wont touch each other.now put the quad in reverse and fire it up.your reverse light will still work also
another thing this does is eliminate the rev limiter in reverse so be carefull as you will have full throttle in reverse.really helps when youre stuck in the mud

I know this was old, but have had my 2006 for a few months now. Love it but hated how I had to change out of reverse to restart it. This mod was the easiest thing to do once I figured out how to get just the hood off. The whole thing takes about 2 minutes. I cant wait to ride it next weekend with this done. :D

It's one of the first things I did. I used to get frustrated when I would go to back it off the trailer and it would die. I had to put it back in nuetral to restart it. Once you cut the wire you can restart it in reverse (with the clutch in). It saves time and a lot of frustration. One side note.....it removes the reverse speed limiter so be careful.

I hate cutting wires, I just pulled the plug out of the connector, done. Taped it as well.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a 2005-2007 400ex? I have a service manual that covers 99-04 but doesn't cover the reverse circuit that was added in 2005.

its easier than cutting any wires, just unplug the switch for reverse behind the gearshift. there is two there, one for reverse and one for neutral. You can leave the neutral switch hooked up and just unplug the reverse switch. Easy to reconnect if you wish as well. Its the grey wire with the "R" on the plug.

That's all you have to do. I did it to my 06' when I bought it new. It's one of my favorite mods.

Your reverse light doesn't work if you do what you suggest. The other recommended way allows everything to work.

if you want to start it in reverse just buy a higher rev cdi box.. sepecially if your planning on getting a big bore or modding your engine some.. it'll squeeze that extra little bit outa your engine.. :D.. i gto a g4 rev box i can rev in rev reallty fast .. i climb hills in reverse all the time and i can start it in reverse :D.. but only reason i got it was to egt xtra hp outa my big bore

pull of the bootie that sends the signal to the cdi. its a little rubber grommet under the shifter, there one there for neutral. take a guess and cut the wire that send the message to the cdi, for the reverse rev limiter. and if you get the right one the reverse light should still work.

Seems like it would be easier to just snip the wire under the hood. That way you aren't playing a guessing game. I'm probably going to go do it myself here in a minute.

Just to be sure. The reverse light will still work, correct?

no it wont. unless you get the wire that feeds to the cdi and not the light unit.
