honda 400 at trany trouble

my brother has a 2004 honda rancher 400. But lately hes been have troble shifting it from drive to neutral to reverse. it seems like it doesn't want to get into gear right away. Once he has it in Drive and wants to backup its hard to get it from drive to neutral then to reverse. if he tries to give it trottle it sounds like its grinding. Any thoughts on whats wrong.

Hey, my son is having the same thing with his 400 AT. I took the
shift cable loose from the shifter and the trans and the shifter
works fine and the cable works fine but the lever going into
the trans won't move without a lot of force. Has anybody
got an idea what is wrong up inside the trans, or has anybody
had this problem also. Really need some help. I haven't bought
a service manuel yet but looks like going to have to. :ermm:
