15 tooth is what comes on the 400ex stock, the 14 tooth will give you more bottom end and will take a little off the top end.

I just put on a 14 tooth over the weekend and all I can say is it is the best mod I have done. AWESOME on trails. Do it. Sprockets are cheap and they take like 15 minutes to swap. Again, do it.

A 13 tooth might be your best bet for trail riding.
I myself race TT/ST and run a 16th for maximum top end speed.
I hope this helps.

I hope this helps. That 16t didnt affect acceleration too bad did it.? I think i might get one.....

Yes it did affect acceleration alittle but it made up fo it at the end of the straight. You also have to have a pumped motor to pull it.
Mine is a stroked 500cc using a Falicon 70.4 mm crank with a 95mm CRF piston. A stock motor would have a hard time pulling a 16 counter.

Ya, 14 is very good... 13 will be better, but it will affect your top end pretty bad.

ya i would go with a 39t back instead of 14. i ride trails and like 15/39 alot better than 14/38, dinndt lose too much topend and still got more bottom end. i also ride with 250rs and 450s and banshees tho. a 13t will really slow you down but u can try it. it only takes like 15 mins to switch sprockets.

i was thinking of trying a 13t myself on my girlfriends ex, it's primarilly a sand dune machine and it's funny about what is supposed to be stock? her 05 came stock with 14 front and 39 rear

Anyone else have this opinion? I was thinking of buying a 14 tooth front just for sh*ts and giggles cause some of the trails I ride are kinda tight.

i was also wondering about a 16 tooth sprocket for my 2004 400ex which comes with 15 tooth on it stock. I am going up north next weekend and those trails are all fast flying mountain trails... so im thinking i could use some more top speed for them and always swtich back to the 15 when i get home... How much will it affect my acceleration? Will my stock engine pull such gearing? thanks alot

Yes, your stock engine will pull a 16T front but you will lose bottom-end torque and acceleration. However, if the trails are like you say and top-end is more important, I say go for it and try out a 16T. As long as you don't spend too much time in the low gears and aren't trying to drag race, you'll be fine. Let us know if you try it and how it worked out.

13t is the way to go. you need lowend more power than anything in the trails. who goes top speed in the woods?.....no one i know can or ever will. its good to have low end to hit jumps and shoot through corners fast. just my 2cents

so is it ok to drop to a 13t on a regular stock engine?

absolutely that is one of the best ways to get a cheap difference in power. that was the first thing i did to my 400.

You could go with a rear, but one of the reasons I did not is because the front sprocket is alot cheaper than the rear is... But there both going to have the same effect.

I went from a 15 tooth to a 14 tooth front sprocket and love it. It definately gave it a little more pep in the low end.

if you drop to a 13 in the front.you have a better chance of wearin the chain out.
so ive heard by a few mechanics.
try a 14/39....thats my next step...

i put a 16t on mine with mods in sig, ran another stock ex and he only pulled me by 2 quad lengths to top end then i went back around him
