I will be buying a Ranger 4.0 here soon and I was just wondering how everyone who has one or who has ridden in one feel about them. Hows the drive?.... Decent amount of power?.. etc

Thanks in advance:)

I have a couple of friends who drive a 4.0 and it is a decent engine. If you put an electric fan and open up the exhaust on them they have a ton of power for a 6 cylinder. :D

What year? In 2001 Ford replaced the old 4.0L with a brand new 4.0 SOHC engine that is a significant improvement over the old engine. IIRC the old motor is rated at 160 hp. and the SOHC motor is rated at 207 hp.
I have one in my 2002 ranger, with the 5 speed auto. tranny. and it runs pretty strong, and it hasn't given me any problems after 51,000 miles.
Ford must feel confident enough about the motor, because it's the same V6 that powers the new mustang ( rated at 210 hp.).
Good luck!

the new(06-07) 4x4s cost more than a f150 4x4

I have one in my truck, mine is the newer SOHC motor. It has good power for a 6. Mine sucks gas, but the 4.10 gears dont help either, plus its a truck. Only problem I had, which is pretty common is the timing chain tensioner, which was just replaced under warrenty. so when you buy, find out if its been replaced, or when you drive it make sure it doesnt rattle at about 2500-3300 rpm. good luck

I love my 06'. Great power for a 6 cyl. I have been considering buying an exhuast but most 6 cyl rangers i have heard with an aftermarket exhaust sound like crap. Anybody have any suggestions for a good sounding & good power gaining exhaust? Here is a pic of my truck.......

i dont drive a ford, but i do have a 4.3 liter s-10. it has gobs (well not gobs) of power, but i can lay the one tire fire on command, and you can sqeak em between 1st and 2nd. scrary winter truck tho. also the fuel consumption aint to bad, aboot $70 every 2 weeks, and i drive a fair bit.

yes sir...

4.3 FTW!!!!

Those 4 Point Ohhh's are decent though...there's a fair bit of asftermarket out there for them, but in the end the 4.3 still dominates

I have the 3.0 V6 in my Ranger and it leaves a bit to be desired, and I have a JBA exhaust and K&N intake on mine. As for the 4.0's, they have a good amount of power and run well. I've driven them and have friends with them and they're good. Slap on an intake and an exhaust, and you'll be really good. My only complaint is the gas mileage - it sucks on both engines

I like my 4.3. I had the crankshaft polished, bored the cylinders .020 out, put in clevite 77 bearings, melling's oil pump, sealed power rings and a comp cam. I also put an electric fan on it, a high flow cat, changed the pipe from 2 1/4" from the cat back to 2 1/2" and put on a mean streak muffler. Also I added a blaster coil and super-conductor plug wires. Am I crazy? Probably, but it sure was fun to build:devil:

Does the 5.4 F150 have a problem with this also? Mine seems to have a buzzing/rattling sound between 2500 and 3000 rpm... Its a 2000 model.

My 99 was a Dog, the 01's and up should be a lot better. The ranger would have been sweet if I could have got a 5L or 4.6 in it.

My 01 F150 with the 5.4 gets just as good gas mileage as my ranger did too. The 5.4 dosent have to work as hard to get the truck moving.

I have a 1993 Ranger 4x4 with the 4.0 OHV. I like this motor more than the 4.0 SOHC version. It has better low end torque and won't tear up after 60,000 miles (plastic cam chain tensioner). I have a stainless 4" round Magnaflow muffler and it sounds really good. I didn't want anything loud or that buzzed. I get 21 mpg and drive it about 400 miles a week. Mine's a 5-speed and I have 31" Kumho Venture MTs and a 2" suspension lift. It's got 15% tinted windows, chrome nerf bars, rear mounted backup lights, tow bar, Clarion stereo, Infiniti speakers, Sirius satellite radio, and a few more things.

Oh, I'd take a 4.0 anyday over a 4.3.

I have a 01 Explorer Sport with the SOHC 4.0. I was going to drop a 302 in it, then i decided to clean the engine (inside) with power foam and sea foam, oil change, filter and flowmaster 40 series. Its got onough power for me now. So I am lifting an IFS, :( I like mine, tranny's suck enormous *** though.

Im not sure. I know the rangers with the 4.0 SOHC do due to crappy tensioner. I would get it checked out though. Mine was really noticeable, now my engine runs smooth and quite as ever.

I had the 4.0 in my 91 aerostar van it was built on the ranger frame. I ran the hell out of it with no real problems from it. It had a traier package with 3.73 gears. Power never left me even when it went to the juck yard with 205.000 miles on her. No smoke, no tears I'd buy another one in a heart beat. as milage was good at 21 per. as long as I didn't tow. Hope thi helps you make up your mind.

I've got an '03 level 2 ranger with a 4.0 with a 5 speed, good power and reliable.Just wish it could get better gas mileage,18 mpg's are hard on the wallet driving 60 miles a day.But I love my truck and will buy another when the tires fall off this 1:D

I had a 99 4.0 Ranger and loved it until on the way to a race in N.C. and my buddy had an Escape with a 3.0 and pulling a trailer could pull away from me. I was not happy.

yeah that's what I said, my buddy was driving, he said he had it to the floor and they were pulling away. It was a 4x4 I wasn't interested in the top speed anyway.

I know this is off topic, but I have a '97 Ranger I need to part out. Front is totalled. All I need to get it running is a radiator and place the stuff back in the correct spot. But lights, grill, horn, and airbag deploy is ruined. Bumper is good though. :macho

I have an o2 4x4 w/ the 4.0 ... I have never had any problems. I haul my quads in it all the time. I have pulled a trailer quite often too w/ no issues.

I have used my parents Dakota 4x4 quad cab w/ the V8. I love it because it feels less tippy and the engine sounds bad ***. The issue is the box is too small.

Does your guys rangers make a humming noise while driving down the road? I asume its the tires, but not sure. It get kind of loud. Its an 02 4.0 4x4 with 26 k

fatkid400
05-29-2006, 06:59 PM
The humming is probably the tires and everything else included.rangers make ALOT of road noise,They're not insulated very well to keep out the noise. Its really bad if its a xl package,(rubber floor mat model) XLT's(carpeted floor model) is alittle quieter. My 99 XL ranger drove me nuts on long trips. But my 03 XLT level2 is alittle better.

i have had 2 3.0 rangers and the power sucks, its alright for a small truck but if i bought a truck again it would be a diesel.

my truck is slow with my quad in the back and the braking is even worse, but for 3 grand it is a nice truck

whats every1s mileage? i use to get 18mpg now it dropped, 300 miles of 16 gallon tank to 240-260

1996 2wd 4.0 auto 187,000 mi and going strong. I just did a 2" lift (bucket spacers and Add a leaf) and mounted some 255 70 tires on stock 15's, a flowmaster 40 series and K&N filter. Even with 3.55's it'll out run my brother's 3.slow with 4.10's and same size tires. I get anywhere from 18mpg to 23 depending on my foot. Towing it does fine, I just run drive with anything behind it. Overidrive if it's in the truck, drive if it's hooked up to it. I'm thinking about a rough country 4" lift ontop of what I got, need a little more suspension.

I have a 97 STX 4x4 with 102,000 on it now. It has the 4.0 in it and it has definitely been a good truck. It certainly could use a little more get up and go, but its good for what I use it for, and it will tow a trailer now problem. I now have 31x10.5x15 mud kings on it, and it is one of the best mods I have done, even for the little amount of offroading I do. I have a drop in K&N, brand new OEM wires and platinum plugs, and a dynomax catback (which is about as loud as stock:mad: ) and if I drive like my grandmother I've seen 21 on the thruway (65mph) If I go any little faster and the RPMS go up just a little bit it drops off dramatically. Now that Im back home doing mostly city and country road driving, I get between 16 and 18 depending on how hard Im running it. My last fill up I got 15.7 mpgs OUCH, gotta get the lead outta my foot. It hurts filling that 20.5 gallon tank. Other than the crappy mileage I can complain its been a good truck though.
