Uhhh... :huh .. Anybody know the weight a doubled up 2x10 header can support over a 10' span?

I'm doing a home inprovement project and I know a 2x10 header would support the weight.

I can not use a 2x10 header. I need to order an 6" I-beam (10" is to tall). The guy at the I-beam place said he needs to know how much weight it will be supporting. He said he doesn't know anothing about wood only steel.

Not sure if this info is needed but.. it will be supported on each side by 2, 2x4 king studs... (or whatever you wanna call em.)

I'm pretty positive a 6' I-beam will be more than addaquit.

Well, to begin with its a 6" I beam, not 6 foot. It still will be a sturdy set up if you ask me, Im not sure how much weight it will be supporting though, a couple hundred pounds im sure.

I think either a 6 inch or a 6 footer will be fine. ha. however if you are not having to span a few hundred feet and hundreds of thousands of pounds of mass, I would go with the 6 incher.

you could also put a cambered I-beam in for added stregnth.

Engineered lumber is the way to go. Laminated beams carry a much higher load range.
