I have a tough decision to make. I can get a 2005 450r OTD for $5500 and can get an '06 OTD for $6500. I have read like, a million threads comparing the two, yet still cannot make up my mind.
At this point, (if you decide to respond) I need you to use ALL of your linguistic abilities and try to explain, to the best of your ability which of the two would be better for me. Try to convince me to spend the extra $1000, or convince me to love my '05 with no regrets.
I mostly trail ride and have some drag races with my buddies for bragging rights.
I DO NOT want to buy an '05 and end up regretting it the first time I ride an '06.
However, I do not want to experience "buyer's guilt" when I purchase an '06, because the '05 would have been perfectly fine.
Which is faster? (at about 200-250 yards)? How much faster (in quad lengths or feet).

OH MIGHTY 450R GODS, I BRING YOU AN '01 RAPTOR 660 AS A SACRIFICE!! SPEAK TO ME......SPEEEEEEEEEEEAK!!!!!

If it was me I would get the 05 because of all the starting issues I've read about the 06.

I got the 06, I had the same thoughts as you and I ride only for fun with friends and family. I have no regrets at all about getting the 06.
my 06 has hrc kit (prob. only motor mod I will have done, maybe a slip on for sound only)
my 06 vs 05 both with hrc's I get them by 4 to 5 lengths in 300'
and I out weigh him by 40 pounds.
for trails the 06 has better gearing (smaller sprocket stock)
my e start has made me cuss twice. it did stall on me and at the time I told myself "$7,000 piece of ^%$&"
but Im still glad I got the e start now (as soon as you learn how to start it, its gravey)
my 06 feels like its got alot more bottom end torque, its great for hill climbs.
I have taken it to the dunes once and loved it oh man was it great in the sand. (and my last quad was a mild built 250r)
power everywhere.
for the $1,000 the 06 was worth it to me.
I see some 04/05's for sale and most say they are going to buy the 06. (that tells me they wish they would have got the 06 or its worth selling the 04/05 for a loss to get the 06)
the 05 is still no punk at all, its fast and there are alot of mods for them. Your not racing so you dont need the fastest available quad just to play on. (but for and extra $1,000 you can have it)
hope this helps,
oh yeah I like the 06 light better

I agree with 450RJAM I also have an '06 450er which I use mainly for trail riding and dunes and have been quite pleased with it. I haven't had any problems starting it, the power is really incredible, my first real ride on my quad was at Dumont and I was really impressed by how easy it was to climb with it. I also used to ride a 250R (actually still two of them) and really enjoy not having to hunt around in the gears to keep the engine in the right powerband. With the 450 you can pretty much "punch it and go".

From what I've read the '06 450's are almost a completly diffrent quad from the '04/'05 450's are.

My friend just got an 06 w/ the HRC kit, and I'm kicking myself for not waiting!! Don't get me wrong, I love my bike, but it takes the mods listed below just so he can out-run me by 3-4 bike lengths! The only thing he has done different is go up one tooth sprocket in the front, and installed a Ballance series slip-on. It's amazing how good it runs. The gear ratio is perfect for trail riding. I'm still not too thrilled with my 05 in tight trails. I wish I would have gotten the 06 Kicker!

Scott,

You live in the perfect area. Drive to Skip's Honda in Keyser, WV and only pay $6,000 OTD for a 2006 450r with electric start.

OK, upon further checking Yahoo Maps says you are 4.5 hrs so that really means about 3 hrs and 45 minutes.

Don't recommend following the directions Yahoo Maps gives either. Go to Morgantown then to Cumberland and use directions from Cumberland to Keyser.

If you can get the 06 for $6,000 man oh man I would jump all over that.
I paid $7,000 with hrc kit installed, and that was no tax.
now your looking at a $500 difference from the 05 to 06.
you will get the 500 back if you ever choose to sell it.

its up to you guys, pretty much just a choice of what you want to brag about..................how fast it is, how good it handles etc.
or ................what a good deal you got on it.
I wonder if the 05 gets better gas mileage ?

I don't have to be the fastest guy in the woods...and....money is an issue. I called the place in Chatanooga, TN and I can get an '05 for like, $4700, and I can get an '06 for $5700.
I suppose dependability is an issue here, and I certainly won't be entering any races any time soon......I just want to be satisfied and pleased with what I buy.
As I said, I am coming off an '01 Raptor 660 (stock) . As long as it is faster than that, I'm good......:D

You guys got screwed! my dad just bought a new 06 with hrc kit, helmet, and ac nerfs for only $5,800. As for the very first question a like the 04-05 year alot better no starting troubles its got a longer stroke on it and with a piston runs just as much compression as an 06. My 04 has always been one of the fastest ones around and now that mine is back together dad can't touch me!!!:D

i have an 05 with mods listed below. I love it. But, I've never ridden an 06. I'm debating on upgrading to an 06 or 07 after this riding season.

either 450r will eat the 660 raptor pretty easily.
I dont think you will see the dealer name from modded R
He must think there is no difference between 10:1 and 12:1
perhaps his dad got the 05 for that and he dont know the diff.
Im sure he wouldnt just lie.
