I just want to know what kind of gas mileage these beasts get? Pulling a trailer or just cruising.

thanks

post pics of your rigs if you have them too.

I get about 18 empty. With a 27 ft. enclosed trailer about 13.

a stock duramax(truck and motor) should get between 19-22
pulling a trailer depends. ive seen them get 17 pulling a trailer with 4 cars on it. mostly depends on driving habits. i can get more fuel mileage out of a truck than a lot of people.

buddies truck:
01 2500 HD, SCLB. Edge attitude, Quadzilla chip stacked, 5" exhaust, Custom PCM, plus more. gets about 20-21 if he stays out of it, but he never does, so he usually get like 13-15 around town, and liek 17 highway on the throttle. could do better but he enjoys playing with sports cars all day long :D

Grandpa's truck:
2005 d-max, Showroom stock.

dad just got 18.7 running 80+ on the highway for a 700 mile trip through KY and TN.

Mines a 2003...

I have 257K on the truck....The engine has 30K miles....

Tranny hasn 't been touched...and keeps on ticking like a champ....I do need to ahve it rebuilt thouhg, because it don't like those high powrred programmers...hehe

The engine's been replaced, but thats my fault...My injectors started goin bad at 180K miles, but I waited too long to replace them, and 3 stuck open and ended up washing down a cyl.

Anywho...I loooove it...Depending on my driving habits I can get anywhere from 15-20mpg...I mostly get 15-17 though because 75-85 are my only speeds on the Hwy.

Now...you people getting 12+ MPG pullin....how in the hell you figure that out?I pull anywhere from 11K-18K (not including truck) and I am only getting anywhere from 7-10mpg..now thats at 70-74mph...

If your searching for a Duramax there are 3 models of the engine..

The LB7 Which was produced from 01-04.5 It has 300/520 pwr rating. It also is the power house. There are guys making 850/1400+ RWHP on stock internals...and running 11's in Crew Cabs!!!

These engines also had injector problems, but GM stepped up and extended the warrenty to 200K miles on them. Don't let that bother you though, just keep the fuel filters changed and use additives and you should be fine.

Then there's the LLY which is made from 04.5 to the early 06 models..It made 310/590. In the late 05 versions it made 605ft lbs. This engine is still used if you order a 06 w/ a ZF6 (manual)

There was some overheating issues w/ these engines. They are great, but the EGR and other pollution devices choke it down a lil,and the turbo lag is greater w/ the LLY. You can block the EGR and get a LB7 downpipe back piece that removes the kitty.

Then there is a newest the LBZ. The hgihest HP/TQ diesel produced in a Pick-Up..At 360/650 it dominates..

They did have some issues w/ the glow plugs, but i belive that is being resolved.

It doesn't have much time under its belt yet and the aftermarket isn't very strong yet,but that will prevale and it will be a monster, but we'll see.

Now in 2007 they are supposed to be producing diesels (from the Big 3) that are supposed to be more enviromental friendly and such...we'll see how this BS goes threw..if it does..i will never buy a new diesel again...

don't expect over 20MPG highway actual mileage.

these guys with 23 and 25 and getting a false report from their DIC on account of a programmer they're using. actual hand-calculated is going to be lower.

yo pro400ex, why didn't we get a step-by-step on how to R&R the duramax over at the dieselplace?

LOL

2003 2500HD Crew Cab

I get 17 around town, 18 on the open road if I baby it but more like 16.5 going 75-80 mph.

I get about 11-12 pulling under 5,000 lbs.

My truck has always gotten crappy mileage in my book. It runs great though. Definitely didn't meet my expectations.

didn't meet your expectations? what exactly were your expectations for a 7000lb diesel 3/4 ton truck?

what cab/bed config does your have? dually?

any mods?

Crew cab, totally stock, not a dually.

I was hoping for 20 running 70 mph or about 22-23 taking it easy (<65).

I was coming from a Nissan Pathfinder 240hp that was getting 17 around town and 9-10 when pulling the same trailer. The diesel does a little better mileage wise and certainly not putting a strain on the truck like it did the Pathfinder to go 70+. Of course as soon as I bought the truck, diesel shot up to be more expensive than Super Unleaded. It just reversed itself over the last few months again. Diesel is now less than the lowest grade unleaded so I am feeling better again. :)

I know a big part of the problem is the emissions though. I come from a long line of diesels. We had a bunch of diesel Rabbits that ran off of oily dirt. lol.

The one good thing is I have a Turbo Diesel Beetle that gets 38 running the crap out of it or about 44 if you take it easy.

Hey guys thanks for all of the replies. I think I know what truck I am getting next. I just bought my 03 ZR2 about 3 months ago and I bought it thinking it would get great gas mileage with it but I only get about 17-18 highway and 11 pulling a trailer...

So now I am thinking about selling it but Duramaxes sell for so damn much and Chevy or GMC is the only thing I will buy.

i'm considering an 06 VW jetta tdi/5spd actually. guys over @ tdiclub.com have found 60+MPG, with 45+MPG being hard on it. awesome machines.

anyway, your engine (being an 03) isn't too plagued with emissions.

i don't mean to sound rude, but are obvious things looked at? like airfilter and fuel filter? either of those are dirty and it'll play into bad mpg.

I havent changed the fuel filter yet but I have thought about it. I have the K&N air filter system on it and I just cleaned it about a month ago

It only has 50,000 miles on it. I can go pick one up this week at Napa.

Fuel filter has been changed more often than recommended. I also have the newest design on it. I just switched back to the paper filter style. I was running an amsoil foam filter. I didn't notice any change between the two.

I run amsoil synthetic oil with the whole filter bypass kit along with the pre-oiler system.

I will admit I need to get it in the shop though. Sometimes the gauges don't work. Other times, it won't restart after I turn it off for a few minutes. It starts for about 1/2 second then dies. Sometimes it will start on the next try and sometimes it could take 20 more tries.

well, i hope you get all your issues sorted out and fixed.

order your filters online and save......

if your not under warrentee and you need any help doing stuff on your own stop by www.dieselplace.com lots of help over there.

that amsoil bypass system is a great setup. if i can find the extra $$$ i will be adding one to mine.

figure every 5-10K on the fuel filter.

fleetfilter.com for cheap good filters.
