what is better for the trails a yamaha rapter 700r a or a honda 450r. i dont know if it matters but i a 220 lbs and 6-2. i would also be making normal mods like exhaust, k&N w/ outerware, and maybe a cam. please dont be bias

ok, here is my take...
i voted for the r becasue i have one and i love it, plus i am not a fan of yamaha...i have seen too many miss rides because they were not running...this is just my experience with yamaha.

i recently got to ride a raptor 700 and was impressed with it...the power was similar and a little smoother than that of the 450r. i like the hit my r has better than the smooth raptors. otherwise they are comparable.

next thing i noticed was how soft the suspension was compared to that of the r at slower speeds. the suspension of the raptor is better suited for trails than the r, but the r has a better all around suspension...a little tweaking and it can be just as soft.

since the raptor 700 is fuel injected, you will have to have the computer remapped when you do the mods you have planned...that could be costly, but with the r, you will need to rejet the carb...

i was coming from a slighty suspension modded 400ex and the r felt tall and a little tippy at first, after a few hours on it, it feel like home again...the raptor felt even higher yet, and more tippier...i didn't like this...it would have palyed majorly into my decision if i were test riding before buying

if i had to do it over again, i might end up with a raptor in my garage if i wasn't for my past experience with yamaha...again, MY experiences. it would be close, but i think the r would win due to the tippiness and my fear of yamaha reliabilty(imagined or not)

there was no choice for me, it was a honda 450r from the get go, but the raptor did make an impression

My friend has a 700 Raptor and he likes it.............I think it is a better trail quad.......I know he has been on rides where he is the only quad that can make certain hill climbs. He rides just about every weekend and I have yet to hear of any complaints/malfunctions of any kind!

The power is unbelievable (as if the name Raptor 700 didn't convince you of that), and as far as the speed goes: He blows my 660 away and the 450 yamaha's..............Both of which have mods and his raptor is stock..............

most hill climbs are more rider ability than machine...i have had my old 300ex up hills that guys on 4wd machines could not climb...

I love my 450r, it hauls @ss and handles great but if I was to ride only trails I would get the 700 raptor. It has smooth power delivery, great fuel economy (efi), and reverse.
it is a torque monster and will climb anything you can keep the rubber on.
I am pretty brand loyal so this is totally unbias,
for the money, if I was buying a trail only quad I would get the
400ex (05/06 has reverse) but that wasnt one of your choices.

speedyquad is correct, I have taken an old 250x up hills that my friends couldnt make it up.(Im still rubbing salt in that wound).

between the 450r and 700 raptor you have a win win situation,
but my opinion is still 700 rappy for trails.

i watched the 700 raptor and the 450R race and the R won 3 out of 3 times... and the guy with the 700raptor was a better rider.......

just for the record.....both of the quads mentioned have "r" at the end of their name.....maybe you should call it a 450.... and for the woods i would take the raptor

Im a HUGE honda fan but i would say the Raptor would be the better quad for the trails becuz the 450r's are to high geard so u cant really putt around on the trails with em u have to be flying....so if u have trails where u can fly then it would be better cuz yamahas suck!! lol

...HONDAS for LIFE :blah:

i voted the raptor because its lower geared for that stuff, but that doens't mean the 450r can't be geared lower for the trails.

thanks for the kind words larry aka LWL-yamaha

I have owned a honda 450R and I currently own a 700 raptor as my primary ride. For a large trail rider, I would urge you to choose the new raptor. Either bike is a good choice, but for trail riding I find the raptor to be better suited. Keep in mind, my 450r was the first model, kick start. I hated it before I geared it down one tooth in the front............the new raptor is ready to ride with no mods, except the much needed PRM 6pack rack :)
