Do you need to reshim the cam or is it a direct swap? Anything else I need to know to install it? I am a mechanic by trade so tools are no problem. Thanks to all that can help....

If the 450r is off the show room floor, yes. When I got my HRC kit the dealers told me that, they have never adjusted any thing. Just a drop in. Mine is doing great. Make sure to run without airbox cover too.. and turn up the idle...

Ok so just swap the cams out? You installed it yourself?

i would check your clearances before and after to make sure, also the factories were setting the decompressor a little tight.

write down your clearances for reference

get a service manual

I thow they usually do that in a brand new machine as long as it is not to tight. Anyone know if the HRC kit comes with instructions?

99% of the time the cam will need no shims .. Measure the clearance of the old cam before you remove it , this will be the specs of the new cam also !

If the old cam is in spec , the new cam will be in spec also!

The kit does come w/instructions. But when it comes to cam, carb, instructions say to 'refer to service manual'. I am considering doing all of the kit except for cam and carb mods (carb needs a special tool-I dont have). Should be no prob for exhaust, wiring, plugs/connectors etc. Then have dealer inst cam/mod carb. Plus, Im a cheap-*** ;)

Two things. I installed my own HRC kit. Cam was no problem but, when it came to shims and clearances I was not real happy with the factory settings so I bought some shims to make some changes. After install of new shims and playing with tolerances I found out that the factory installed shims were the closest I could get so I ended running factory shims afterall. And the "special tool" I used to release cam tension was none other than a small screwdriver. Intimidating install at first. Piece of cake overall!

Great. I Would like to know if you guys would go for an 05 or 06 kick start? The dealer wants to give me 1000 off for the 05. I hear the 06's are faster what would you do?

I went for the '05. Picked it up in Scottsdale AZ last month for 5000.00 out the door. I basically based my decision on the price, and kick start has never been a problem for me.

the 06 has alot of upgrades on it, If price is your obstical you can prob. get an 05 for real cheap this fall.
I say get the 06 and let it rip, the stock 06 will take the 05 with hrc kit, and drop in the 06 hrc kit and you have a pretty hot toy.

....My buddy & I were at El Mirage dry lake, and did several long-run, drag races. We both have 06 450er's. His has HRC kit, no lid, etc. Mine is box-stock (I have HRC kit but havent yet installed). The thing is, my stock bike was dead even w/his till I hit the rev-limiter (flat-out/pinned in 5th gear), then he kept pulling on me. Hopefully the HRC kit will wake up my bike a little better than that???

We were dead-even, except @ top-end. The drylake had surprisingly good traction. We both left w/frt whls off the ground.
