I got my 400ex about 3 months ago and i love it and its a great first quad. Some of my friends are getting bigger bikes so i was wondering if its more worth while to just switch to a 450r when ive got the cash (probaly sometime in the fall) or try and put money into my 400ex to make it faster. I figured if i got the R and upgraded it , it would hold its value better than the 400 but according to my friend ( hes curios george on the forum) he said that a 426ex could keep up with a 450r no problem but it doesnt seem logical, let me know what you guys think is the best way to go

I run a 426ex xc and it will run with a 450r but the whole time i'm shifting from 1st to 3rd, someone on a 450r can stay in 2nd gear. You wouldn't see a big disadvantage until you were wide open in forth and the 450 walks past you like your standing but once it tops out it can't pull away. the the greatest disadvantage is the acceleration through 4th and 5th in my oppinion. also the 450 can pull uphill faster but if you work the clutch and shift correctly you won't loose too much time.

if u got the money it would be smarter in the long run.

You'll dump more cash in the 400 to get it as good as the 450 and you would just buying an R

Personally i would rather have a 440ex with suspension and only pay 4k then buy a 450 for 5500-6700 bone stock.

just curious but have u ridden a 06 450? i have a 440 and a 450r and the 450 is by far my favorite of the both.

Ya my step dad has a stock 05 i haven't ridden the 06 yet though. Im faster on my 440 then i am on my dads 450 but i have aftermarket suspension on my 440. If you want to race in the upper classes i could see maybe buying a 450. I guess it all depends on what kind of riding you do though.

from what ive heard the 06 is a lot faster than 05. totally agree with u on it depends on the riding hes going to be doing.

As far as 05 to 06 comparison, my bone stock 06 450r was just as fast as my piped and cammed 05. With an HRC kit, it isn't even close. The 06 can wax it everytime badly. Coming from a 440EX also, it doesn't quite compare either. To my 05, it is close, but my 06 can walk away like it is standing still during acceleration, and it still has enough more on the 440 to pull up a wheelie and leave it on the top. If it were my decision, I would get a 450. The year doesn't really matter as they are both great quads, but if you have the choice on an 06, save up the extra cash to get it!
