Ok, I was told that I have slop in my cam chain...But I dont know how to make sure I do before I go and put ina HD chain...Can you guys give me some tips on how i would check to see if I have to much slop in the chain there for causing a rattle right as i left of the throttle? It kind of sounds like a exhaust leak kind of...Anyone know where I could find a how-to on changing the cam chain? Also you can see my mods in my sig.

Hey BH, from what you posted in another thread about your "tap" problem, it sounds like you have "slop" in the cam chain. I am guessing since you decked the head to raise compression, this also brought the cam closer to the bottom end......I would talk to whomever decked your head to find out what how much.

I hope that make sense.

I am no expert by any means, just my $.02!

That same tap I had when I rebuilt my 400EX.

one way to check your slack is too take the bolts out of the tensioner and see how far back tehy gold pressure on it. should push the tensioner out a little bit. it it barely moves or does not move at all you need a new chain. but like chino said, your decked head could be helping this problem occur.

Its seems that the tensioner is fully retracted when I take it out while holding it. That is what your talking about right?

It has been decked .025 on the head and .025 on the jug.

Well, if you deck it .025 + .025 and the chain stretches even a little bit, then you could have that "slop" in your chain.

I would suggest trying a 02 crf450 cam chain, that is the cheapest thing you can do to try to fix the prob.

Service Honda has crf450 chains for like $35 shipped. That is what you would buy on ebay for $50! Same length, a link wider than stock. A new oem chain for a 400ex is like $60!

NO, I am Dave, I am in KC.

Colby is a site sponsor and also has a shop that sells part for quads. I think his price is cheaper than service honda if I remember correctly.

It sounded like a "tapping" that varied at different RPMs.....

You need a 2002 CRF450 Cam Chain......other years will not work.

I watched it last night and forgot to post, I still think it might be the cam chain. If that does not fix it, it was only $35 and some time in your motor, a lot cheaper then a lot of other things.
