I have been out of the mix for a few years now. How will a 440ex square up with the new 450 honda or the other new bigger atv's.

with one you have a ticking time bomb that can barely keep up with the other stock bikes, (of course you hear the stories of "I can smoke 450's all day long" but ive yet to actually see this), on the other you have a reliable stock bike that you can depend on every day that will beat the 440's stock and ESPECIALLY if you mod it.

stock 450 will beat a 440, but a 440 that is piped, filtered, and jetted correctly may have a chance with equal riders.

I am now planning on putting a stage 2 cam in my 440. I have been told by a couple people now that say it will help a lot. I just wanted to know when i hit the dunes this summer if I would even have a chance with the new 450's, or if I should stick to racing with the 400ex's and the other old breeds.

Just wondering how many people you think would have a 440 that is not piped, filtered, jetted  Unless its a 440 Cannondale

I have a 440EX with all the work on it as far as cam, porting and polishing, exhaust, HC piston, etc. I also have an 05 450r with a pipe and cam. In a drag race and with a good launch, I have no problem getting the 450r. My 06 with just an HRC kit will woop its arse though. My 06 can kill my 05 and 440EX, so it really depends on what you are racing as far as 450s and how well your bike is set-up.

Now, on a track, on the street, and most other places, either of the 450s will destroy a 400. The 400 has great bottom end, but it lacks so badly on the top that a 450 can actually pull up on a wheelie and leave you. If you gear it higher, it revs extremely slow, so you are instead lagging behind on the bottom badly instead of the top. Basically, you are gonna have to set it up right if you want to run with them, because there always seems to be a weak point.

As mentioned, all bikes run and perform completely different, though. Where as my 440 rips pretty darn well, I have met others that are slow as hell and not even competition for my bikes. That being said, an example would be my 99 400EX which ran like a champ up until the last couple months when I realized that the way this bike was going it was never gonna crap out and I went ahead and did some work. Another guy I met had an 03 that he got basically brand new and the bike was not only slow, but had parts like the clutch going out constantly. You just have to build them and let them rip I guess.:D
