EX into a hybrid

how hard is it to put a liquid cooled yz or Crf motor into a ex frame. and which one would be better. MY son does not want a new quad at all. So i suppose I'll give him a new motor

I'd get a KTM 500 dirtbike motor.. It would be the baddest mamma jamma at the dunes.. however with the money it would cost. I know he dont want a new quad but I would just buy him a 450R.. I mean it will be alot easier and prolly cheaper.. whats so great about a 400ex that a 450r dont have.. I traded my 460ex in and got a 450r and paid just 2,600 once I traded mine in.. not a bad deal..a new motor will cost in my guesstimation if u bought it used from someone parting out a KTM it would be 600-800 bucks and I dont know if u know how to put a motor in but if u dont it will be another 700-1,000 in labor charges:eek2: .. so for a new motor it would be as much as $1,300-$1,800.. but then u have to factor in the problems with a birtbike engine u will have... It will be another 500-600 bucks in just new engine accesories so... around 1,800-2,400 for a new motor and for it to be installed.. Id get a new atv..

Buy a crf450 engine. Send the frame to JB racing and then you'll have to buy a bunch of accessories. You can probably get away with spending 2500 but then you can sell the 400ex engine. Definentely something worth doing if you want more power but want to keep the bike.

he wont get anymore then 400 for a used 400ex engine if that!!.. you will have alot of trouble puttin in a new engine and after readin the prices on previous posts of how much it would cost to put a KTM motor in is just rediculous you can go buy a KTM for the amount it will cost for a KTM motor but if u want ur son to have A TON of fun and just absolutely tear up 4-stroke atvs it is the motor to buy!!.. however he will have some control problems and it will be like handling a modded banshee for him in the first 3-4 weeks but if he gets use to it and is good with it, u wont care and will forget about the 3,000 dolla u spent on the motor..... however I still think u should convince ur son to buy a new quad it will be alot less money and time... and work

last time I checked a KTM motor is a ton more powerful then a CRF motor.. and much more faster as well.. Im just sayin if i got a new motor It would be a KTM, but I wouldnt get a new motor I would just get a new atv.. a KTM is a 500 so ur son wont be doin any MX with a KTM but he can with a CRF throw that into consideration.. but buy a new bike before u consider that :p

if you do a hybrid do the KTM 525 motor but by the time you spend all that money on a hybrid you could have done bought a 450 with mods

here is how a KTM hybrid with 400ex based frame would look I rode it it is Brad77's quad and it is pretty nice

that bike is really nice with some different plastics and a diff color frame..

I wish people would think before they type:mad: For a stock 400ex motor, you can get between 600 and 800 on ebay. For one with mods, you can get as much as 900 to 1000 (sold my 440 for 950). Then you can sell the 400 carb for $50, exhaust if it's aftermarket for around 250, electronics for 75, battery for 25, and oil tank for roughly 60. So, even if all the stuff you can sell is stock, you can come away with about 1100 give or take. With aftermarket you can get maybe 300-400 more. That being said, you can buy a crf450 motor with electrics and carb for $1500. (ebay, or i've seen them on her frequently for that). So as of then, you're out 300 bucks at worst, or even ......if you had aftermarket motor mods in the first place. 450 stock headpipe and silencer that you can custom fit to your frame yourself....$150, stock 250r radiator...$50, kicker/extension ...$75.....then all you have to do is run the pivot bolt through the motor, make the correct spacers, get front and top motor mounts fitted and put it all together. So, you can do the conversion for about $600 if you do it yourself. Yz400 motors go for 700, yz426 motors go for 8-900, and yz450 motors go for 16-1700.

that could possibly be YOU!!.. I am employed for a business that sells aftermarket atv and utility vehicles parts and we also sell some salvaged parts and there is nowhere to be found a motor that will sell for 950.00.. Honda doesent spend more then 400.00 to get that motor and on top of that the motor would be used... my boss said that would be absolutely crazy to get 950.00 for a used engine that has been pulled off a 400ex.. we sell brand new engines for Honda 400ex's for a better buy then that cuz there new.. maybe U should think before u talk..:rolleyes:

:mad: why won't you listen to me. I'm not saying it COULD be done....I'm saying it HAS been done. By ME. $1000 shipped for a gt thunder 440. I may have gotten a good price for it, but it can be done. Of course, it was heavily modded. I also said that the average 400ex motor will go between 600-800. Look on ebay sometime then decide whether you want to argue with me.

Also, where do you work because i want to know where they sell brand new 400ex motors for less than 900 directly from honda. All the prices i've been qouted are more than that.

I work for J&W Cycles... we don't sell 400ex motors unless a customer needs a new one..and we get a brand new motor for around 1,200-1,300 ... I dont care what you say u are not gettin a used motor for that amount.. that is just rediculous, and u can google and look up J&W for all I care. I am just saying I know that u did not get over 700.00 for a used 400ex motor its like an atv once it has been ran u automatically lose about 500.00 no matter if u rode it for 1/2 hour or 5 minutes Its still a used motor.

Evileye,The man is saying a modified motor,again modified,one more time for good luck,modified motors.On ebay, I see motors on there that have 440kits in them,426's etc...starting at 750.00 and I will see them selling for around 850.00 to 1100.00.(Again modified)I see stock ones selling for around 700.00 give or take a few..Either way you could sell your 400ex motor for a decent price,and all the other goodies.Put it towards your Yz motor,talk to ss440ex he will hook ya up w/his yz kit.Now you quad is rippin up some serious dirt,,,,:D

Im trying to find the thread.....I sold it to a guy on here. It had a brand new 440 big bore kit, hotcams stage 2, gt thunder port work, carella rod, etc,etc....Pretty much anything you could do to it besides oversized valves and a stroker kit.
