I have a 2005 400ex and I want to lower the gear ratio. The guy at the local shop said the a 15 tooth CS is stock and somebody else said that a 14 tooth CS is stock. What is the stock size?
BTW the 400ex is at my vacation house 4 hours from me or I would just count them myself.
Thanks for your help.

stock on a 2005 400ex is a 14. 1999-2004 is a 15.

I third that . Guys - why is this ? what have they done to the motor that gearing is different ? I had 14/39 on , the bike had power but ran out of steam in the Yellowood trees . so i went 14/38 , but i slipped on a cannister , so im thinking about 15/39 . But why did they change from 15 to 14 ? the obvious is torque , but I cant think why they'd slow down an already standard bike ? :(
I also found a local , bought 1 month before me , had 14 /38 , which would make it slightly quicker standard , but this is confusing .

Guys ?

My 2c - go 15/39 - its slightly quicker than 14 /38 (use the gearing calculator ) , and when you slip that first pipe on - the bike will pull cleanly to fifth Max , and you 'll have Lovely top-end . Im having to change from 38 Back to 39 , and order a 15 now , as a result ..
