Right now i have an 03 yamaha yz125, but i want to sell my bike and buy a quad. I like to ride trails, some jumps and a little mud. I was wondering if the 400 would be a good quad? I have around 2500-3000 to spend, so will i be able to afford something good. This will be my first quad, but i have ridden quads before. I was just wondering what kind of power this will have compared to the yz, and what i should look for when i go to look for one. Any help is appreciated.

I like mine very well. This is the first quad I've ever owned so I really don't have anything to compare it to. Altough I've ridden several others and also many 3 wheelers. I ride trails only and the 400ex has plenty of power to pull my 250lb. frame around. I'm a power addict myself but have grown to like my little quad quite alot.

I could have bought any quad out there, but went with the 400ex and love it! This is from an old 2-stroker.

your 125 is going to faster than about anything stock except the kfx 700 but thats outta your budget, i had a 2002 cr125r and it did faster in 3rd than my 4 wheeler does now

Dude, so people are going to tell you that it is a good 4-Wheeler, but i'm going to be honest with you... Its the BEST four wheeler out there if you ask me ( Thats for trails and stuff, and some track) I got mine when I was like 14, and it was my first quad ever, and I don't regret it at all.

But things to look for is just look around and see what kinda shape its in, and ask questions about it... Ride it to before you buy it to make sure its really what you want.

You cant go wrong. I just recently purchase my 02 400EX for 2750. Its my first quad and i have no regrets.Great power and rideability even for my first ride. You can keep pace with others straight stock like mine and the aftermarket is endless in possibilities. Honda reliability

ok, ur on a 400ex forum everyone on here will tell you a 400ex is the best bike, same if u go to the Z400 forum or KFX or LT-R or YFZ... but even though i used to be a 400ex rider I am not going to agree.. If u can spend 3,000... If i were u I would save up and get up to about 4,500 and get a 450R or YFZ because they are just such great quads and If u get a 400, in 2-3 years u will be just like me and grow out of it and say... what did I do?? And then u will want something faster... So I would give u good advice since I learned the hard way start bigger because obviosly u can handle speed from a dirtbike.. u can handle a quad speed so grow into a YFZ or 450R... 400ex's are good dont get me wrong I will never bash on 400ex but I knew when I bought mine when I grew out of It we had money to get a new one so dont buy when If in 2-3 years you dont have money to buy a new quad.. 400ex's just arent fun after u get used to them because u always see a bigger and faster bike that does everything better then u and u want that...

The 400ex is a pretty good quad, but nothing compared to the 450's like he said... But I would stick with a 400ex unless you are going to race.. But if what you'll be riding is just trails and a few jumps stick with the 400ex.. But def. if your racing GNCC or GNC go with the 450.. Either way, you'll have a good quad if you pick Honda.

if you want that power later on you can always bore it out if you want more power

no way i have a 400ex with my mods listed and my buddy has a 01' ktm 125 and we draged i beat him the first 100feet then the rest of the way we were dead even, no way 3rd gear on your bike is faster then a 400ex

my 400ex is almost stock, and my dirtbike used to pull wheeelies in 3rd no way my 400 is doing that

you dont think that has anything to do with weight?
shorten the swinger on the four hundred and then it would come up even eaisier.....My point is you can't judge 2 diff. bikes by how fast they will wheelie:)

I'll second that!!! With that said, the little 400ex's make really nice trail rides. Alot better on the slower mud filled rides.

I got my 400ex new in 04 and I love it...Stock theyre not the fastest but theres a million and one things out there to do to it, and plus the parts are cheap and never hard to find. Now with the mods i have in my sig i can pull 5th gear wheelies sitting down and keep up with my buddies stock 06 yfz450 until about 60mph then he pulls ahead.

I was going to say that. Mine throttle wheelies in 4th and 5th...no clutch popping necessary. That's what some choice engine mods will do to the lowly 400EX

I own a stock '05 400EX and it keeps up off the line with my buddy's fully modified and bored CR125. It doesn't have as much top speed as his bike, but will be tied until the 400EX tops out, then the CR will just keep pulling. It probably has more acceleration than a stock YZ 125. It's an excellent choice.

He's right, I rode a 450R and loved it , but in a few years instead of wondering what you were thinking just dump $1500-$2000 into it and bore it out. It would be a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new or used 450, still be ultra reliable, and besides in 2 or 3 years your going to need a rebuild anyway.

iam also a fromer 2-stroke dirtbike rider and the truth is that bikes are fasters but quads are better in somethings than dirtbikes like crusing, MUDRUNS, jumping is easyer, never getting stuck...
but this 400 on mine is a fun quad and as all the ppl argue about u can wheelie so easy. so GL on finding a 400 they arnt hard to find :)

I would stick behind a 400ex anyday....mine is stroked bored and highcompression piston....i could get away with racin in the 450 class with eez....all my friends are on there "BIG BAD 125cc dirtbikes" and guess whos blowen em away.......o yeah and with the top end thing....nothin some gearin wouldnt fix

your yz125 would take a 400 anyday unless the 400 had alot of $$$$$$$$$$ in it

i would stick to the 400ex...just becaz..you can buy parts that are so much cheaper...but the z and kfx are also great 4 wheelers. just because of the speed they come with stock...so its all opinon

05-16-2006, 08:30 PM
everyone is sayin 400ex parts are so cheap... no actually they aren't I found that the same exhuast for a 450R is about 50.00 cheaper then the same 400ex exhuast
