Quad riding is a great sport and keeps me out of trouble.

but lately my shoulder has been slipping out of its joint. It has been getting dislocated when riding on beat up trails. It is the most severe pain you can imagine.

When do you know if you should have surgery and should you just do the exercises with elastic bands.

Anyone else ever deal with this?

thanks

Having seperated my shoulder last november I can tell you that the excersizes with the rubber bands do help to a certain extent. I actually had to start going to a gym to help stengthen my shoulders and back, they were screwed up so much. It definatly hurts like a b@stard and takes a long time to heal. Good Luck!

My doctor said that because mine did that so often that it just wore away the joint. He said that he could do surgery, but didn't recomend it because I am so young and it might not help. So he gave me some exercises to do and told me I needed to build up the muscle so just take a 20 lb weight and lift it to the side about 50 times real slow. Do that llike once a day and do the other arm so you don't get a weird looking arm. It helps out a little but you pretty much just have to live with it.

my friend that races dirtbikes is going through this right now...the 2nd time he dislocated it was from a wreck then a couple weeks later it did it for the 3rd time when he was playing tennis in school...the doctor said hes gunna need surgury because instead of having to pop back in it just slides in because it happenend so much. so he sold his bike since he cant ride for so long and hes gunna wait until the 2007's come out befor he rides again

I never had a problem with dislocating shoulders, but hurting your shoulder can really cause a pain for the rest of your life. I never lifted weights, so when I crashed my 400, it cause my shoulder to seperate. It was the worst pain that I have been through. They took X-rays and showed me what happened. I pushed my shoulder hard for a semester of weight training and it doesnt have any more pain until I start to throw a baseball or football. But I suggest just working out and using the shoulder more and it should build up a good immune to normal riding.

Somehow, I managed to seperate my shoulder and tear some ligaments all at the same time. The first time I went riding after recovery, it hurt ALOT. I asked my doctor, and luckily he had worked with a local MX racer in the past, and gave me his number. He suggested I check out a shoulder brace that some MXers use, and man I'm glad he did. That thing was the best $60 I have ever spent!

I never knew that shoulder braces existed that will help to prevent shoulder dislocations
until now. Thanks for the info vpofthedrc
I was thinking that I was going to have to sell all my quads.
I just found a dealership in my area that sells motocross style shoulder braces, and i will pick one up after work.
Hopefully, this will work.
Thanks again. I am glad I started this post.

I slipped on ice when i was 14, i thought i had just pulled some muscles in my shoulder, it hurt like h3ll but i toughed it out, after that my shoulder would pop out on a regular basis, i couldn't throw a ball or nothing, physiotherapy helped a bit, then i went over the bars of my quad when i was 17 and landed on my shoulder and hurt it good. exrays showed nothing, so i went to a specialist, he said the only way to tell what was wrong was surgery. so under the knife i went. It turned out the anterior muscle attached to my arm had ripped off when i was 14 and nothing was keeping the front part of my joint in place, so he fixed it, it hurt really bad for 3 months but my shoulder doesn't come out anymore and i can ride my quad with no problems at all.
now i have popped my other one out but its not the same kind of hurt as the other. I think i am going to purchase the brace just in case though.
sorry for the long post, just thought i'd share that i have experienced the pain and the surgery, but its all good now. and i can ride just fine.:p

Good luck buddy! I dislocated my thumb when we were riding at Arkansaw during the open house. I tried making it all of the way home to have my doctor pop it back, but I couldn't take the pain any longer. I stopped somewhere in WI and just started yanking on my thumb until it went back into place. That sucked. That hurts like a sob! I'm sure that a shoulder hurts even worse. I've broken bones that didn't hurt as much as that dislocated thumb... Good luck! I hope to see you at some of the XC races.:)
