black smoke???

hey I was wondering if it natural for a 400 to put out black smoke when you rev it up??? This happens with a aftermarket exhaust without a spark arestor... Could it be because of no sparkarrestor???

it's natural to puff out just a little when you rev it if it doesn't in my oppinion it's to lean but it shouldn't be a large puff just a little

i dont think its a good thing if an engine smokes..especially black smoke...keep checking your oil because it may be burning it..lots of things can cause it...valve seals..rings..ect...just keep an eye on it

Well I know I am running a bit on the rich side and I plan to change my oil soon... I will get back at you if changing the oil helps it any...

black smoke isn't a sign of burning oil:huh black smoke is too much fuel

now if it was puffing out blue or white then i would be alarmed

black smoke=running rich or incorrectly
white smoke=burning coolant (which is not a concern on a 400ex)
blue smoke=burning oil

just to let you know that i have a 02 400 and i had to take it to the dealership because it was smoking blue. come to find out that i had an bad set of rings but good news is that it is under warr.:D
