What are the costs you guys spent to put a crf engine in a stock frame? I'm planning on doing this and I'm wondering what the cost would be, engine and all (not total bike cost like suspension, just powertrain).

i dont own one, so i cant tell you exactly, but ive wanted to build one for a while so i know some about them

for the 400 you need new motormounts that can be bought from ss400ex on this site, you need a 250R raditor and tabs for that, and a kickstart extenstion, im sure i missed something someone else can clarfy, alot of people like to say that you "chop" a frame up for the build, and you really dont at all just a few changes and welds

you end up spending a little over $1500 for that conversion provided you already have suspenion and all that

you cant put a CRF engine in a stock 250R frame because the engine is too tall, you can however put a YZ450F engine in, which you still need everything but no radiator.

From what ive heard if you put it in a stock frame it will crack alot easier and put alot of stress on the frame thats not ment for a CRF engine.

so its probably worth looking into buying an aftermarket frame already set up for the engine, while it costs alot more, its alot stronger from what ive heard, again i dont own one all my opinions are based on information ive gathered and what ive heard works and what doesnt

hope this helps you:cool:

I'd be putting it in a stock 400 frame, which would get professionally gusseted. I'm not that hard of a rider, I try to pride myself on being smooth, so I doubt I'd be cracking frames. If it came to that then I'd go aftermarket.

I just want to get a round number I can expect to pay. Also do you have to fab up an exhaust?

your probably better off buying a new production quad.

i built a hybrid walsh 250r/blaster

and it was alot harder to build than we expected

but the crf conversion's do look good, just make sure to get a welded frame/sub-frame

What do you mean by welded? I would rather do the hybrid, I love my quad and would rather have a dif. engine than new bike.

I think he is talking about having supports (gussets) welded in the frame for extra support.

--CRF motor, carb, wiring, kick lever, headpipe .... $1700
--Kick start extension .....$50 - $200 (buy another knuckle and make one -or- Walsh, Legacy, etc.)
--Water pump cover .....$50 - $150 (06 450r -or- American Dream)
--Radiator ......$100 - $350 (stock 250r -or- PWR, Fludine, etc.)
--Frame modification ..... $200 - $650 (yourself -or- send it off)
--Pipe- CRF headpipe and 400ex, 450r -or- custom made silencer .....$150 - $450
--Radiator hoses, throttle cable(yfz450), carb boot, and other little misc stuff..... $100
Frame paint -or- powdercoat ..... $50 - $150
Rear fenders need cut and Nerfs need modified(if they have kick-up heal guards)

Think I caught about everything. If you did a lot of the stuff yourself you could get by with about $2400 or could spend anywhere up to $3750 or more easily.

But you have your 400ex motor, carb wiring, exhaust, oil tank/cooler, etc.. to sell. Depending what you got out of that stuff, that will bring the price of the build down.
Hope this helps some

Just called JB racing and they said 450$ to do the conversion and gusset.

What do you guys think I could get out of my entire drivetrain? It's an 03 engine in great shape with no mods.
