how to tell 86 engine?

It seems a lot of aftermarket covers work on 87 and newer.
how do you know what year you have?

The engine # can tell you, TB06E-2500001, is 86.

take a look at the intake. if it has 2 lines going down through the middle it's a 87+. but if it's just open then it's an 85-86

By cover, I'm gonna take a gues and say your talking about side cases? All liquid cooled 250r motors are basicaly the same, with only some internal changes, such as the bridged intake, changed gear ratios, different style piston, and shorter or longer crank. But all parts can be made to work on any year motor.

Yeah im talking about the stator and clutch covers.... why wont they fit the '86?

from ESR

ESR BILLET ALUMINUM ENGINE MOUNTS ARE LIGHTER AND
STRONGER THAN STOCK (AND THEY LOOK AWESOME, TOO!).
FOR '87-'89 TRX 250R (WILL NOT FIT
'86 250R). CHOOSE BLACK, BLUE,
RED, OR BARE ALUMINUM FINISH.

The motor mounts for the motor on the front of the frame are different for an 86, so the 87-89 mounts won't fit an 86 frame. But the stator and clutch covers are universal for every year.

Not true, the older clutch covers have a different kick starter shaft depth on th inside of the cover !! You would have to change the kick start parts to make 86 covers fit a 88/89

in 88/89 the kicker shaft has the spacer built-into the shaft, where as 85-87 you have to put the spacer in. in order to use a 85-87 cluth cover on a 88/89 you have to use a special kicker spacer from hinson covers

I have changed covers and it is true about the spacer but i don't think it is specail but i could be wrong anothor way to tell if its a 86 bottom end is to go balls out in 5th shift to 6th and if it bogs for a second or 2 you know you got a 86 cause the gear ratio from 5th to 6th is different from 87-89 for that reason , did that make any sence? even with my 350 I get a little bog
