i need a little more power out of my 400ex this summer i was planning on doing maybe bore my motor to a 426, i have quite a bit done to my 400 as you can see below in my signature, i was wondering if it would be better for me to sell my 400 and buy a used 450r or just bore my motor to a 426 all suggestions would be a lot of help thanks!

I would sell the 400 and get the 450r.

I just bought a 05 400ex about a month ago and Im really thinking about selling it and getting a 450r.

Putting a-arms / shocks / pipe into a new 400 is just not worth it for me. Just buying a 450r would be MUCH cheaper and you still end up with a much better bike.

Really wish I had just bought the 450r in the first place. Thats what I was looking at first too!

Why sell it?.... a just put a 440 in it and you will be smokin 450's up and down the track all day... I have a 460cc stroker, cams, and piston in my motor and a 450 hasn't touched me yet... I havent met a 450r that is modified but I've raced 450's with a exhuast and cam before and they can even compare to my power. Everyone says stroker kits blow up your engine but they dont at all I sent my cams, stroker kit, and piston to a tech school in Missouri call Linn Technical Institute which is about 35 minutes from where I live and they installed and rebuilt my motor for free so they could give there kids a learning experience and It runs good and the instructor said come back in July of 2006 and we will do another free rebuild and every 2 years I have to get a engine rebuilt and I love it... I blow clutches and pistons every 15 hours but those only cost me about 50.00 becuase my uncle works for a place that sells atv, and car parts and I get my parts for nearly free..but even if Linn Tech didnt give me free rebuilds and free repair I would still have a stroker, cams, and piston because I love my power and top end!!

Just remember the 06' 450r is a different and better machine from 04'/05'--engine is totally different among other things. Any year YFZ will do.

Ya a 440 is still very competitive with 450's on a track.

hands down I keep my 400ex and put a 440, stage 2 cams, and piston in it which will cost u just 374.00 over a 4,100 450r for a used 2004... if u get a 440, cams, piston 450r and YFZ wont touch you.. I have a 460, and stage 2 cams, and 14:1 piston and havent been competed with by any 450 even the LT-R or YFZ or 450r

looks like a poochy 450r I bet I smoke that thing in a drag race even If I give u 5 lengths

i dont want to be buying new pistons and clutches that often though and 1 other reason i dont want to sell mine is becuase all the **** i have on mine i would have to get a stock 450r and it will take for ever to get all the money and deck it out like my 400ex

whatever floats ur boat lil dude. If I had a stock engine on a 400ex i would say F it and buy a 450r but I dont and I love my 460cc stroker.. for me a stock 400 motor isnt enough power for me.

we all understand the point that you have a 460 stroker and its sooo fast and no one can touch you because you are amazing and your 460 stroker is so awesome.

id say keep the 400 since you have so much already done to it. You'll never get out of it what its really worth. a few engine mods and that will be a great quad

I can guarantee you that a 450r with a pipe, cam, and porting will piss all over your 460 stroker.

ive seen a lot of engines blown when people add any more than a 416 bore kit.So if you want more power than a 416 then go with a 450r.

yah... no u havent... engines dont just blow if u put even a stroker crank.. they blow because people who put bores in their quad dont rebuild their engine as they are suppose to every 1-2 years.. I have my 460 stroker for 1 1/2 years and I have blown like 4 clutches and 2 pistons... and i have done the rebuild and its not bad at all just take care of a hard working engine like that.. and alot of people use synthetic oils with big engines.... THATS A BIG NO-NO!! and u have never prolly actually seen but more then 1 if ur lucky engine blow up u hear bout them cuz of those reasons..

well, after coming from a 400ex with a 426 and hotcam, full port, exhaust...compared to the 06 450R, there is no comparison. The difference in hit of power with just a pipe and cam on the 450 just doesn't compare. My friend has a 426 right now, and he is 80 lbs lighter than me, and I suck bad at drag racing, and I still took him. Then he got on mine and rode mine against others, and to quote he said 'I have no more pride in my 426' And believe me when I say this guy is very proud of his 426. It hauls, but compared to the water cooled 450s, I just can't see putting money into a quad that starts out at such a disadvantage against everything else.

What you just said there is the EXACT reason why now I want to switch to a 450r after only 1 month of owning a brand new 05 400ex.

After riding my friends brand new all stock YFZ and my other friends 450r with a TC pipe, I got back on my 400 and wanted to kill my self for buying a 400. I didnt even wana ride it anymore, and its been about a week, and I still havent done much but putt around on it all depressed :P
The difference is just too great to even think of putting money into the 400.

for me the decision was all about starting level. Not just CC based starting level, because if that was the case I'd be on a raptor 700 or a ute.

What can you do to a 400? 440 kit, there is a 505 kit out there (I think). Then there is all the non-motor upgrades, shocks, arms, axles, bars, etc.

The one thing I will give to the 400 over the 450R is the turning radius. I think the 400 has the best manuevrability (sp?) of any quad on the market in the woods.

All my buddies have much bigger quads, and I wasn't getting left behind by any stretch of the imagination in the woods...but it was such a downer to drag on one of their quads and then to get on mine.

Also, think a year from now, even 2 years...are you still going to be happy on a quad that you have maxxed out and are still at a disadvantage? I have nothing but love for the 400ex..but the main internals of the motor (other than the tranny to add reverse) haven't changed much since 99 when it came out. So the motor design, the carb design, exhaust design are all, for lack of a better word, antiquated. Rock solid quad, no doubt, just aged.

if you have the money go with the 450r no doubt. the 450r is set up a lot better for racing. Also its liquid cooled which is a big plus. the 450r well also be a lot more reliable than a 426, because the motor well be completly stock. When you start messing around with the bores and everything else or a motor sometimes reliabity suffers. Also there is a lot more potentale for a 450 because you can bore them up to the 500s and more. with the 400ex i think i biggest that i heard of was a 500ex.
