Hey y'all.

I was running my quad last Friday and the damn thing seized up on me. It won't kick over and I pulled the oil filter and found NOTHING but shavings. I'm getting the motor torn down by my sponsor as I write. I have a question though....should I replace my oil cooler? Or, can/should I just flush it out?

I've gotten conflicting ideas and I want to do this right. I'd rather pay the money to replace it, but then again, I'd like to save money if possible.

If you're wondering, here's a pic. It took me the winter to build it and get it ready for racing. It has 4 races on it.

I say buy a aftermarket oil cooler that is bigger. it is better than stock. and a good time to buy one.

sucks that your motor seized up!

If you aren't looking to replace it, it shouldn't be a problem.

It is just tubing bent in an S pattern a couple times w/ cooling fins welded/soldered on. A good flush should clear it of all debris.

apparently, a large piece of metal got loose and TORE up the insides. the following is what i need:

new top end
left case
bearings
crank
(3) gears
oil pump

i am thinking it's going to be about $1800 for me to get it done....includes material and labor.

are there any other alternatives? what's the cost on a new one? who else makes motors for the 450r? cost ranges?

any help would be appreicated.

thanks.

thanks bama....just got off the phone with my sponsor....they are offering me a brand new crated motor from honda for $2900.

is this a good deal? i think this is the route i should go rather than rebuilding my current one.

any ideas? i'm gonna try to get my sponsor to work a bit more with me, but i am still unsure of what they are willing to offer at this point.

i'll know more tomorrow....i have a meeting with the owner to discuss options.

any ideas people? i am looking to do something fast....i've invested a lot of money in this thing...and i hate looking at it every time i go into the garage.

thanks.

if it costs 1800 to get it fixed. I would spend 2500 and have it built with some power.

or buy a motor off ebay or somthing. but then again who knows what the heck has been done to it.

thanks rooster...

1fst...i'm looking to start fresh. good idea though. i thought of the idea of building a more powerful engine, but i've had such bad luck with this thing that i'm looking for something that is dependable....and i think a stock engine will give that to me. if firgure that i can run a new motor for this year and build it up, if i need more power, for next year. i'm just sick of dropping serious coin....i wanna make this right this time.

i just wanna make sure that $2900 is a good price for a stock motor. anyone have any idea?

Why did it go the first time? Who built it and what did they do? If you built it then well you live and learn, but if someone else built that motor and it went after 3 rides I would be throwing a fit!

And there is no way I would spend $2900 on a new crate motor that is putting you right back to stock again......fair price or not.....I only paid $3600 for my entire 05 450R!

What could have possibly gone down in and tore up that much stuff!!!:eek2: Sounds like a piece of hardened steel fell in, but where did it come from. I would be trying to figure out what went wrong before you just decide to scrap it and start over.
