I dunno about 16 to racing quads but I think 14 would be more resonable. Just about every quad race I saw last night there was a quad wreck or 2 and people are slamming and being run off the track and the holeshots are the scariest. But btw last night was my first race and I got 3RD out of 10 or 11 riders. I was pretty happy.:D :D

Contact your AMA/ AATVA rep they are the ones setting the boundries. The tracks have very little control, unless they are outlaw

Just to let you know. The AMA/ATVA did try to change the ages on the ATV's last year and it was vetod by the Board of Trusttees on the advice from the legal department. If an AMA track lets someone under age ride and then that person gets hurt. There is all kinds of legal problems that will happen. I am not going to go into them now. Your parnets can't sign a letter saying that it is OK for you to ride. That is the same as if your parnets signed a letter saying that it is OK for you to drive a car at 14. What is the policeman and then the Judge going to say about that letter after you get pulled over?
Yes the age limits need to be changed, but getting it done is not that easy.
I am sure that we will try to change them again at the AMA/ATVA congress meeting in Oct. But it iskind of like a company making there workers wear hard hats and safety glasses for 10 years and then someone says that they are not needed anymore.. The first time an accident happens, what is going to hit the fan from the insurance company?
AMA/ATVA ATV congressman D-18 and District President

if you ask me i think its bull**** that a 15yo has to ride a 90cc but a year later can ride a raptor 660

i think like a 250ex for example, should have an age limit of 14 or less
i know a 12 yo that rides a banshee
with quads its a big step
15 and under 90cc 16+ any farken quad you want

should be
5 and under 50cc 9under 90cc 10-12 250cc 12-13 350cc 14+ 0-1000cc

The AMA/AATVA races are insured by some of the same ins companies that insure the outlaw events. So that excuse doesn't fly. Also would you explain why they(AMA) allows such young riders to participate in motorcycle events. They are at the same risk as the young quad riders?????
IMO, AMA does not lower the age for the quads because of a number of reasons. 1. it is not politically correct, especially since the concent decree of 1989, which has expired. 2. unlike the motorcycles, there is a small number of riders demanding the youth classes. So the ama doesn't want to take the risk for the smaller cash return. Let the outlaw tracks build the demand for the youth classes and see how fast the AMA/AATVA jumps on board.
IMO the AMA has for years just took money from the quad racers for their participant card ect and provided very little in return. **** they rarely even mentioned QUADS in the sorry *** MAgazine every month.
I guess we are supposed to feel blessed with that 2 page print out that we get now. Whooooo YA!!!!

HI I AM 15 AND I THINK THE RULE IS STUPID. I CAN HANDLE A BANSHEE AND ANY OTHER QUAD U GIVE ME BUT BY LAW I CAN ONLY RIDE A 90 THAT CAN JUST PULL ME. I HAVE BEEN WANTING TO RACE FOR A WHILE BUT I CANT BECAUSE OF THE STUPID LAW. I THINK THE TRACKS OR ORGINAZATIONS SHOULD HAVE A COURSE THAT U CAN TAKE WHEN U R 13 THAT WILL ENABLE U TO RACE ANY SIZE U WANT. JUS MY 2CENTS

zach greenwalt,14 years old. i ride a 2001 250ex for wheelies, then i race and ride a 2002 raptor 660r. They need to trust us with bigger quads and bikes. I am 6"1 and weigh almost 200lb. do u think i am gonna fit on a 90?

I just saw a story on ABC World news about atv usage. That sigment really showed how little they actually knew about what they were talking about. They said atv's are very easy to tip over, no crap. They didnt acknowledge the difference between sport quads and 4X4s or even that there are different sizes. Maybe if they would have looked a little further into it they would have noticed that it is not possible for a 15 yr old to ride a 90cc atv!

Nausty

they are only easy to tip over if you don't know what you are doing and you put your self in that situation.

right, just like an SUV. But the way they said it made them sound so stupid

I too think there should be a progression in CC size up to age 16 where it should be unlimited. Perhaps something likes this......

Step 1 Minimum Age 13: Limited to 250 4 Stroke, 125cc 2 Stroke
Step 2 Minimum Age 14: Limited to 350 4 Stroke, 175cc 2 Stroke
Step 3 Minimum Age 15: Limited to 400 4 Stroke, 200cc 2 Stroke
Step 4 Minimum Age 16: Unlimited

The problem is that if a young person does not weigh very much, they can't control a heavy quad. It's pretty well known that 1/2 of the ATV related deaths are those that under age 15. So, while there are some of you that can control a heavy quad, most cannot. I have a very heavy DS 650. There are friends that have them, (27 year old that weighs 155 lbs) and he had an accident and rolled down a rather large logged off trail. The rest of the trip I watched him from behind struggling with that DS - He was just not heavy enough to control it well.

See my perfect example below. Do you think this kid can control that Polaris? In hard corners and jumps, I don’t think so.

Most of those under 15 group are killed because of head trauma.
I think there should be a helmet law, ride a quad/dirt bike, wear a helmet or get a ticket. I hate to go to riding areas and see people flying/jumping all over the place without a helmet.
I also agree with what markynark said above.

roostin_dale

It should be based on your size and riding ability.

And about the helmets....me and my dad went to little sahara about a week ago and there were only around 50 people there the whole week....the whole time we only saw 2 other people with helmets...thats stupid.

There was a guy on an alchohal banshee makin a few drags..he wasnt wearing a helmet....and he had a tiny little kid on a 250ex...the kid could barley reach the foot pegs!

I think it should be based one size and experience and thats all really, I don't think they should base it on age at though but if they did 16 is wayyy overboard. I also think 16 is kinda high for racing but really I would have to say if you race mx about the average size of the rider should be about your average 14 year old at least. Racing is pretty dangorous.
