does the 04's down have six gears and if so would the 05 06's go faster if they had six gears and revers.AND could you redo your transmiton to have six gears and revers.

No 400EXs ever had six forward gears. For 05' and 06' they just added reverse.

To change your gear ratio it would be much simpler to mess with your sprockets. I believe the newer ex have a 14 where the older ones had a 15. GOing up a tooth in the front sprocket would give you more topend. I dont know much about the back but im sure you can get more precise changes in gearing by changing the back sprocket. I dont know how much going up or down a tooth changes in the back maybe someone could help out?

The rule of thumb I often hear is one tooth change up front is similar to a three teeth change in back.

go up on the back gives more bottom and mid, loses a bit of top end. going down on the front gives more bottom and mid, etc. i was running the 14t up front but i felt like i was shifting faster. with a 15t f and 39t b, i like ALOT better.

I agree, 15/39 is what I run also.

if your rear tyres/wheels size is smaller than stock then you will need to go up to a 16T on the front to retain the same gearing.

Here's a link that someone just gave me...real handy...
