Many new parts on order from C&D but anxious to get customizing in the mean time so I started with these pieces...

polished kicker and painted (for now) the heat shields

I didn't spend the time to sand out all the casting marks but it still turned out decent

I did take the time to do the shift lever properly, 220, 600, 1000, 1500, 2000, buffing compound and some mothers...

Very nice man, but if you don't mind, what is up with the reflectors welded to the grab bar? Just curious.

Glad you asked about those reflectors. Gay aren't they? They're stock on the Canadian quads along with two additional reflectors facing rearward which I already removed. I believe they serve to satisfy some legislation. Do the American Hondas come without these posts? I haven't found a grab bar I really like yet and figure I'll eventually rip this one off so it's staying for now. I considered cutting them off but those big globs of weld!!!

The only benefit I can see to them is that I can be seen at night from the side when I'm crossing the road!

Yes the American ones come without these. I agree pretty gay looking. Not much of a purpose. I would also cut them off except for those big welds. Pro Armor makes a grab bar that looks exactly stock, just without those posts. Other than that very nice work. I like, I like alot!

wow I cant believe they do that to quads in canada it did make giggle at first lmao! glad you didnt do that. So I like your project is that done by hand or with like an orbital sander or what? I might give it a try

I did all the sanding by hand and the buffing was done with a wheel and some polishing compound. Some mothers and a bit of elbow grease will produce almost the same results. The bumper only needs a minor amount of sanding prior to polish to get a good shine but removing the casting marks and parting lines on the other parts takes the most time, particulary any corners, hence why I left the kicker for now. The brake pedal is mostly flat so it should be easy and turn out nice.

WRT the rear bumper, I could understand these reflectors on the 400EX but why the R? My guess is Canadian law wouldn't permit the sale of them without the reflectors. Have to meet that code you know:ermm:

yep she is the law up here in canada, all quads are the same way up here, i think the reason it looks so gay on the 450r is because it is only done here in canada, so they just welded them on to make it pass. No other bike has this alien looking piece on there, makes you wanna beat the thing off

Mine looks especially gay, because the person who used to have my bike painted them orange, on my red bike, looks like puke, cleanin them up this weekend

you should polish the case, it takes a while but looks good. polishing takes a lot of work to keep looking good, a few rides and it will all be scratched.

I polish my sleds from front to back every season. A touch of mothers brings the polished finish right back. The tunnel usually takes the most beating but still shines after a bit of light sanding. It's always less work after the first time. The quad does spend a lot more time in the mud so we'll see if it's worth keeping up.

The brake pedal...

WOW!!! That is a very nice looking motor. Something to aspire to. I doubt I'll take things that far but I may polish the cases when I tear into the motor. I looked all over the bike last night thinking about what smaller pieces to do next, the brake and clutch levers, maybe the front brake booster, the pump covers, radiator, my new nerf bars etc. but I figured the block and the cylinders would be too much work. Yours does look great though. Did you do the work yourself?
