View Full Version : Why I love my 250R

Well, this past weekend I went out to Sand Mountain in Ft. Meade, FL. It's a private facility with TT, PeeWee, and MX tracks, as well as a makeshift sandy 300 ft. drag strip. Well, with my 250R almost bone stock...only mods being FMF fatty w/ turbine core silencer, Uni OEM replacement filter w/o airbox lid, ESR cool head w/ 23cc dome (175 psi), Keihin 38mm A/S carb, CR250 reed cage, and external rezzie Elka's up front. Everything else is BONE stock.....stock Ohtsu tires, stock gearing, ect. ect. STOCK PORTING, 66.5mm piston.

No one had paddles since this place isn't all sand, just the little 300 ft dragstrip that they set up was sugar sand. This is what I raced, and how much I won by, or lost by......

06 LT450R (uncorked stock pipe, no airbox lid, Yoshi cherry bomb). I grabbed holeshot, lost by 1/2 bike at 300 ft.

06 TRX450R w/ HRC kit. Jumped him by a foot or so out of the hole, lost by 1 bike at 300 ft.

06 TRX450R, bone stock. Jumped him by 1 bike length, held it all 300 ft. Inexperienced rider though.

05 YFZ 450 (Dr. D pipe, open airbox w/ K&N, jetted, -4 trailtech flywheel, cam mod) Even out of the hole, lost by 1-1.25 lenghts. This was the only bike to put any distance between my front tires and his rear tires.

04 Z400 (pipe, K&N, no lid, jetted) Jumped out 1.5-2 lenghts immediatley, kept around 2-2.5 lenghts by 300 ft.

I started in 2nd gear on all races, and made it to 4th gear by 300ft. All big bore 450s would pull on me up high, but weren't as strong out of the hole. All in all, I am massively impressed......I cannot believe how well my little stock 250R performed. :muscle:

What I find very entertaining is that I used to have a ESR TRX5 pipe w/ the same turbine core 2 silencer, along with the stock head (170 psi)...otherwise identical to my current combo......I got spanked repeatedly by a bolt-on 660 Raptor.....something that shouldn't have happened. Ever since the FMF pipe went on, the powerband feels better....just a longer spread of power.

Anyway, I'll stop rambling now. LONG LIVE OUR 250Rs!!

(BTW, I picked up two utility quads and needed to sell one of my sport quads.......the YFZ is what I decided to sell, and I'm 1000% satisfied with that decision.)

:D

for a 250R that pretty much is stock. He had stock tires, and no porting whatsoever. Thats as close to stock as you will see any R's.

Those stock tires are actually very good for drag racing as far as radials go. Stock porting is holding that bike back a lot. Good job keeping up with the newer bikes.

Thats awsome. Thats probably the best example of how 250r's fare against the new 450's that I have seen. Keep in mind all the stuff on the 250r is just bolt on parts. Keep in mind the one 450r, and the YFZ have had part of the engine apart before. Throw a good port job on the 250r, and I bet the 250r would win almost all of those races.

Well, yes my bike isn't completely stock, but neither were most of the 450s! Pipe, carb, reeds, and no air box lid on my 250R compares equally in mods to the YFZ, one of the 450Rs, and the LT450R....and maybe even to a lesser extent as TheFontMaster pointed out.... cam mod on the YFZ and a cam on the faster 06 450R. If any of those three bikes were stock, I would bet that the little 250R would have taken them. I easily beat the one stock 06 450R.....and remember, both of these 450Rs were 2006s......which are night and day faster than any 04/05.

It's just impressive to show these new 450 guys that the old school 250R isn't anything to laugh at.....particularly when a brand new LT450R only gets a fender on me in 300 ft....and one that's not even stock.

The stock Ohtsu's are really impressive as 440ex dragger pointed out. I got a nice jump on almost every one of them thanks partly to those tires.

I've got a ported 88 jug that is soon to be shipped from Neil Pritchard (CLeigh Racing). We'll get some races back on once this jug has been swapped over and broken in. :macho

Hey Rob,

Are you the same guy who raced Dade city with Dave ware last year? If so hey man you need to hit up Ocala Thunderbowl the turnout was great last Saturday (35 quads). Matt Baker is another guy who I think you raced with down in Dade City.

Good choice on Neil with porting, he is one of the best 250R porters out there IMO!!!!!

Nope, that wasn't me....haven't been down to Dade City before. Where in Ocala is Thunderbowl?? I'd be up to some drag racing any day of the week, especially once I get ported jug on.

Tom,

I followed advice from you and others when searching for a good porter, which is why I went with Neil. Thanks!
