im looking into buying a raptor. i think it will be the best quad for me cause im 300 lbs. and its all table muscle. i will be riding dunes and some trails. i would like long te=ravel but im nit sure if i will b to wide for some trails, so i think i wil stay with standard travel. just curious how good stock shocks are how much better will it ride (trails, woops, and dunes), with aftremarket shocks? sorry so long and thanx

The stock shocks suck! I weigh like 120lbs, and have my pre-load on five, and I STILL bottom out my shocks! I would recomend YFZ shocks. Because they are much stiffer, more adjustable, and mount up with stock a-arms(after some mods).

i just made this modification to my 2006 raptor 700r. they mounted up nicely but did lower the from by almost 2 inches

the stock yfz450 shocks mount up with no mods whatsoever...but you will need to get 4 shock bolts and lock nuts to replace the ones you take off. it looks like they are over-tightened from the factory and strip on the way out

I was talking about mounting them on a 660R.:D You have to grind the top shock mount, grind the bottom shock mount, and cut a whole under the bottom shock mount.

yeah your absolutely correct...for the 660 you definitely have to mod it. i have also heard that you can get the yfz 450 a arms and bolt them in..but i am not 100% sure

YFZ 450 A-arms and Raptor 700 A-Arms are excatly the same so adding them for perforamnce reasons will do nothing......but YFZ A-Arms are way 2 narrow to bolt up on a 660 and will kill the ball joints almost instantly, for a 700 yes, for a 660 No

thats what I thought.:D

You can run LT suspension without going crazy wide. A +2 arm is fine for trail riding unless you ride on really tight trails.

They are right though, the stock shocks suck!!! The best thing that you can do with those are toss them in the trash. YFZ shocks work, but you may have problems with those bottoming out as well given your weight. For the best results, a good set of aftermarket shocks would probably be the best bet and offer the highest quality ride and handling.

update!!!

i finally got the suspension dialed in...but i also had to add a lowering kit to the rear. it appears that the YFZ front shocks lower the bike quite a bit. now it's awesome!!!!! night and day difference

i have the works steelers triple rate shocks with rezzies and they are much better than stock to say the least. if i were to do it again, i would consider getting the yfz shocks and getting them revalved instead of buying the works. but dont get me wrong, my bike now handles extremely well, and it sucks up a lot of nice bumps. rezzies will help cool the shock and reduce fade. i wouldnt buy shocks without rezzies but i ride pretty hard and do mx so... most people probably wouldnt get much of an advantage with rezzies. your choice!
