View Full Version : Gas prices making you think twice about your vehicle?

I know everybody here absolutely hates the rising gas prices . It kinda makes me think about how I am going to afford filling up my truck when I go to college next year. I have a 5.4L Ford F150, and with the type of town driving and country road driving I do, I am only getting 10-12mpg. I am seriously considering selling my truck and looking for something that gets better gas mileage than my truck (maybe a Jeep Wrangler, I need 4x4, and a tow package especially).

Anybody else considering a different vehicle choice?

scratch SUV off your list, most SUVs are as-hard on fuel as trucks...

scratch toyota off your list if you tow...

maybe a car?

The most I would tow would be a single axle trailer with 2 quads on it. BUT, those toyotas are pretty pricy for what you get, but I know they are super reliable.

I might even consider selling my truck and just getting a cheap motorcycle to get me through the summer... just borrow my dad's truck when I need a truck.

I know what you mean... I live on a farm, and LAST summer we had several days where we would burn over $1,000/day in fuel. We have no clue how we are gonna make it. My dad doesn't want me to sell my truck because I've only had it for 4 months, but I work on the farm and HE pays my gas as part of my wages... And with the way farming is, he can't afford to pay my gas, and I still owe him quite a bit to pay off my truck. And he doesn't want me to get a motorcycle either because he thinks they are too dangerous for a daily driver (he was almost killed on one when he was a little older than me, but still rode all the time). I also have to pay for my pilot's license training, and avgas which is way higher than regular unleaded. And we own our own airplane that I train in and we found a broken lifter and had to get an engine overhaul (about 8 grand-getting off cheap)

I think I just have to bite the bullet and do what is financially the smartest choice. Not just for me but my whole family.

Nah, no problems here.

2004 VW GTI 1.8 Turbo 5spd. 30 mpg - very fun car to drive. Wife drives it about 20 miles a week for work.

1999 Chevy Silverado 5.3 Z71. 15mpg... never really drive it except for hauling stuff. I might fill it up every month or 2.

I also have a work vehicle (truck) that is covered completely, including fuel. In about 4 weeks I'll be getting a new Impala for work and this will be our primary driver, with fuel included.

Nope, with the new Silverado you can get the new 6.0L as the Max package... 345hp if I remember right.

Tow packages will include what you stated as well as a larger tranny cooler.

The wife drives 160 miles a day to goto collage 4 days aweek in her VW Passat getting about 30-33 miles per gallon. I could drive any where froma few miles to a couple hundred miles a day 5 days a week in my F250SD Deisel gettina any where from 13 to 20 milse per gallon. My day wanted to get rid of his 1991 Olds 88 with 117,000 miles on it, So I snaged it up. I will run it till it dies and it gets 30 mileper gallon! Will not sell the truck need it to put our toys around, just will not be driving it every day now!

I think it is funny how you say get an s-10, they get good gas mileage- I just bought my 03 ZR2 S-10 two months ago thinking that it would get close to 19 mpg just like my Blazer did with the same engine that I had before this truck. Well I thought wrong- I am only getting 15-17 mpg highway. I want to sell this and get a Duramax diesel. Have 10x's the pulling power and get 20mpg highway.

Well for my year truck 1997 the 5.7L was the biggest motor avaliable in a 1500 but 1999 was the last year for them. As far as the newer 1500's I thought the 5.3L was the biggest, and the 6.0L was only avaliable in the SS model. MOFO may know something I don't and yes you got it on the basic tow package.

I've got a 3.4 V-6 Tacoma 4x4 and average 18mpg, it tows things just fine as long as your pulling something that a V-6 should realistically be pulling. Just don't expect great fuel mileage no matter what you drive if your pulling something behind it

True, I drive only a 5 miles to school and back to my house every day, but after school I will be running between fields that can be up to 15 miles away from eachother on country roads several times, driving through fields, idling a lot, lots of stop-go, etc. If I was looking for GOOD gas mileage I would just get a car, but I just need something with better gas mileage than what I got, that I can still do what I need it to do.

Or, everyone in the country could write letters to the President demanding an investigation into why prices at the pump are so high. Big Oil is making record profits by bumping the price up everytime someone in the middle east sneezes. The last time all of the oil CEO's were called in front of the Senate to explain themselves, they weren't even sworn in. Do you think they told the truth???

Around here (Kansas) all I have heard is that the reason for the rising fuel prices are because of ethanol. Sure ethanol is supposed to be EVENTUALLY cheaper and better for the environment, fuel manufacturers need to have the equipment, facilities, etc. to make the stuff. Also, new pumps throughout the country need to be updated to accept ethanol, and new pumps and tanks must be added to distributed the E85 ethanol. It takes a lot of money to do this....

I'm not sure if that is actually the reason or not, but that is just what I have heard.

I hear you guys on the Wranglers havving crappy gas mileage.

I drive 35 miles each way to work 6 days a week + an extra 5 miles out of the way for my evening job m-f. Other than that I rarely drive anywhere.

((75miles/day * 5 days) + (70miles on sat.)) = 445 miles per week = 23,140 miles per year = 1928 miles/month.

(1928 miles/month) / (15 miles/gallon) = 128.5 gallons/month = ~$350 per month just to drive to work.

I need a crotch rocket body/frame with a 90cc engine in it.. lol.

its because the stupid a*s rag heads think they can screw us over. i think that if back a couple decades ago when we were gettin along with the rag heads we should have burnt their oil wells up first before we started to burn ours up. that way we wouldn't need so much help financially when it comes to this stuff.

I just bought a Chevy Colorado last year with the 4 cyl./5 speed and I'm getting somewhere between 20 and 25mpg. I can tow a heavy 6x12 trailer with all 4 quads with no problem. The truck is rated for 2500lb. towing capacity but I've been told GM under rated it. The automatics have a higher tow rating though. So far it's been a big improvement fuel mileage wise over the s-10 blazer I had before. Right now with gas at 2.89/gal it is still costing almost $50 for a fill up though.

That is correct.

It has nothing to do with the strength of the frame or suspension. It is because of the short wheelbase. 6000 lbs gets a little squirly when putting on the brakes on gravel with that short wheelbase. ;) The trailer will want to push you around.

It's not the pulling that is the issue.. it is the stopping that causes a problem.. lol.

The best ½ ton truck for gas mileage right now is the chevy silverado with the 4.8l v8. My dad switched from a light duty f250 with a 5.4l triton and his gas mileage went from 12-13 mpg to 23-24, which is not bad at all. The 4.8l is 285 hp, which is plenty for pulling even some good sized trailer. It does lack low end torque, but not worse than a toyota...

I would guess the limiting factor is going to be the 1/2 ton frame and not the drivetrain or motor.

no actually its the oil companies that are screwing us over for the most part. and if your going to get pissed step back and look at this thread.... most people are getting under 15mpg!!!!! were sucking down oil like no other, maybe if we stop driving so much the prices will go down. i think they are trying to teach us a lesson, and if they arent they are just screwing us over because they know we are dependant on oil. ethenol is the next step, we have tons of corn right in our own country... and its cheap. sure you get worse gas milage and the cost may be the same as paying 2.00$ a gallon, but at least the money would be staying in the country and helping our economy.

While those mileage numbers seem very inviting, I know without a 1 ton truck I am screwed. I tow alot and car is out of the question...

Besides, I priced insurance on a small car, its WAY too expensive compared to that of my truck, too many pricks driving wrecklessly in cars, causing the insurance to skyrocket!

Always see those cocky ricer drivers weaving in and out of traffic like their on a go-kart track... disgusting, really.

News to me. Not around here.... Doesn't really make sense when you think about it... more civilized driver's in trucks from what I've observed. $120 per 6 months is nothing, a new driver here would get charged like $7000 a year.
