I just put some 8" beadlocks with 18" kenda klaws on my 03 z400. It still has the stock gearing (14f 40r ) and i was wondering if i should change the gearing? If so what should i run?

if you add 1 tooth on the front it will be about like stock gearing. i have 20 inch tires on the back of mine and i dropped the front sproket down a tooth for a little more low end power in the woods.

When you install smaller tires you have to add teeth to the front or drop teeth in the rear I though?

4TraxRider is right! You will rev out real quick dropping one on the front with 18's. You will also wish you had a 6th or even 7th gear to hit stock top steed! I'd say to drop 2 in the rear for that.

i would leave it when i ran 20's i dropped it to a 13 so the 18's with the 14 should be good if you like the low end grunt if your running 18's you must be mxing so you want that low end out of the corners

depending on your mods I would say just bump up the rear about 2 teeth. Going by the fact that I run a 13-42 setup on my z with 20's it is about the same gearing as you now. My gearing is too low now because of my motor mods I just revs out way fast. I am probably going to switch my gearing to a 13-37 or 14-42. I need more top end.

So what I am saying is the stock quads need the extra "Kick" that the 13 tooth (Or 18" wheels) give them. Put some cams and a full system and rejet and you'll be ready to gear back up.

I have
fcr39
hmf full
stage two hotcams
Twin Air pro flow filter assembly
Dyna Programable cdi

And it spins like a mo fo:blah:

that was kind of a confusing post. The best thing I can tell you is to go out and ride. On the mx track I like to be able to shift into the "Main Power" So you have the torque to role out. So just go play with it. I have a used 13 tooth sprocket you can have if you want to play with it. Then again they are only 8 bucks at rocky mountain.

I dont know if it matters but everyone is saying that it depends on my mods, I have a dg full exuast, k&n filter, filter adapter, dyno jet, and white bros. rev box, and air box filters.

Thanks

with those tires you are probably about the right gearing. Take it for a ride and see how it pulls...
