anybody here ride street legal dual sports or supermoto bikes? with the rising gas prices, im thinking about looking into one after high school. im 16 now and already have a 99 rodeo waiting for me(get license this oct.), but with commuting to college in 2 years, i want to think ahead. A few of my friends want streetbikes and although they look insane, i cannot get myself to want one. I would much rather have something more tamer and easier to ride, especially since i will mostly be using it to cruise around town. I was looking at the suzuki drz models. the drz400s and sm are nice it seems they have plenty power to get around, but not as crazy and dangerous as a sport bike which is very important to me. I know alot of the time it is the other people on the road with you that cause accidents, but it just seems like a 400cc four stroke dirtbike would be alittle safer than a 600+cc sportbike. info, comments, pics, vids, opinions on the subject

thanks

my oldest bro has a drz400 with a white bros pipe on it and he can easily go anywhere, hes like 6'3" though...but he can handle it and he says its safe.

i found one in ur area for $2700...if u want, i'll post up the link for ya, or just IM me at mjpsoccerplayer1. the one for 2700 needed a little work but had some stuff done to it, and it was fairly new from what i remember

yea thats a nice one even though i wont be actually looking to buy one for a while. i dont know weather i should look into the true dual sports like the one you posted, or go with the motard style like this.

the true dual sport would obviously be able to ride some trails so that would probably be pretty cool.

04-22-2006, 04:59 PM
yeah well i dont like the motard style only cause it would be no fun offroad...

u could get offroading tires for it? maybe you could try but i dont know...

my older bro like i said has the drz and loves it. he rides at the meadowlands (illegal, yes) and it borders the highway so he hops on and off the trails/highway all day long with it and its not as illegal as it would be if he was doin it with a regular yz or ttr or somethin like that

yeah i must say that sounds pretty sweet. i would be tempted to ride through every trail i saw off the road:blah:

ill probably look into the dual sport style with dirt tires.

that sounds awsome, i would LOVE to get a street legalized mx style bike but the only thing that would hold me back is the reliability. im not familiar with the 450s but i know that the 250f's need quite abit of maintenence to keep them running good. the drz/xr style bikes are known to be very reliable. definitly post some pics and opinions when you get the bike, it should be awsome!

here is pics of my street legal xr250r, I got pulled over by cops in almost everytown around me becasue they had doubt of the real license plates. Now the bike is inspected and passed without many questions, I don't have a front brake light switch, but the inspector understood it could be took as extremely annoying to others when offroading. Beware the forks are somewhat stiff for street riding and so is the rear shock and the gearing can be short.

one of my buddies has a crf450f that he turned street legal and it is bad arse. it is pretty cool also to see a 450f going with you down a highway at 65 lol. he has the supermoto tires liscense plate and so on to make it street legal. he does rolling stoppies and pretty cool wfo wheelies like the bigger street bikes do and the fact that if he wanted he could mount his extra tires and hit the trails is cool also.

yeep thats an F tho which requirs more maintenance and change of gearing.. im thinking the X will be perfect for the road and trails.. i have my quad for trails so ill probobly ride mostly road on the bike, i want to go with the 17 inch wheels. does anyone know where i an get those, ive only seen em by one company and they are EXpensive

im definitly getting interested in these. im saying that within the next year or two, you will be seeing a big increase in motorcycles riding around. if i keep my quad which i really want to do, i would probably like the drzSM since it would be ridden on the road 95% of the time.

I've got an XR 250 that fits the role of dual sport very well. Motards look fun and they fill their intended purpose, but I think a dual sport would be more fun IMO.

It will be an increasing trend like has been previously stated, and it is quite fun to ride trails that are connected by road and be totally legal. :)

the thing is, i dont have any legal trails to ride anyway and although i dont like to admit it, the places i ride on my quad are within riding distance from my house so i just ride the quad on the roads to get there. wouldnt be any different on a dual sport bike except it would be legal to ride the roads (still could get busted in the trails). one way or another i will most definitly try to keep a quad, even if i have to trade my 450r for a z400/400ex+cash to help pay for the bike, so i really dont need to go offroad much. some may say why not just get a sport bike if your not going offroad but i dont want to get into those, way too dangerous for my liking. riding a dual sport will be pushing it for me:blah:

i must admit, i really love the looks of the drz400sm. just gotta throw on a yosh pipe, low profile blinkers and taillight, and it would be perfect

That's a sweet black DRZ400 :eek2: How much of a power difference is there between a DRZ400 and a 450X? I don't have much experience with anything other than 125 mx bikes, so I'd probably opt for the lesser powered DRZ.

utter sweetness:chinese:

are those 17 inch wheels? what did they cost you?

im not really sure im sure the 450 obviously has more power ive never ridden a 400sm

rbgnwa45

For sure the R would have a lot more power...The question is would I rather have the probably-smoother power delivery of the DRZ. If you are refering to the pic and my post..That's not my CRF :p I wish...Someday a CRF450R SM will be mine...so...You can almost say it's mine just in a future-tense..Again, I wish :p . Yes those are 17" rims. Utter sweetness.

id love to have a street legal crf ...good luck doing that in ny... or any dirtbike for that matter

thats why the drz is my main choice, comes street legal off the showroom floor. a crf would definitly be crazy though. i wonder how the engine would take all of that riding though

it would be fine with proper gearing because u wouldnt be revving the piss out of it on the street like off road, crf , yzf are basically derived from a streetbike

For street use which (DRZ/CRF R or X) would be better?

ny300exrider
04-25-2006, 09:23 AM
the drz400sm is supposidly great on the street, especially since it is designed to be street legal from the factory. the bike already comes with supermoto tires and rims, good gearing, and all of the required blinkers, lights, etc.

and imo it looks cool as hell

psh 260 is light man.

well you said for street use. if you are planning on riding on street and dirt, id go with the crf x

In comparison to a fully off-road bike, 260lbs is not light at all.

i love these drz sm's. although motorcycles in general slightly worry me, im beginning to really look forward to cruising around on one of these

Iv been looking onto converting a dirtbike over to be road legal. Think it would be great to be able to go from on road to off road and the gas milage wouldnt be to bad either. Dont need anything to big just going to use it around town and on weekends. Think it would be alot safer than a street bike.

uh oh:ermm: im very slightly beginning to have second thoughts on the whole bike thing. the only thing keeping me interested is how much money i would save on gas. i dont know if i really want to put my life in that much danger, people here on long island drive like absolute a-holes. idk what i want to do, i guess i have plenty time to think it over
